Show Tuesday, Chronicle Page Eight Women's movement has improved society Editor: structure she refers to, with its ulcers, alcoholism, job insecurity, etc., incidentally, was not designed by women. Contrary to what Tamarah proclaims, the women's movement celebrates and promotes free will for women and men. It promotes freedom from stereotypes and a questionable social and economic meritocracy, as well as the right for dignity and respect regardless of gender, race, religion, occupation or any other superficial criteria. Great progress for our society as a whole has resulted from the efforts of the women's movement. I suggest that Tamarah become more educated about what she chooses to address in the future. At the most, she can acknowledge and participate in the legal and social privileges she enjoys as a result of the women's movement or at least offer a more informed, intelligent criticism. and two-dimensio- I found Tamarah Hardesty's editorial "Women's nal movement fails to achieve true progress" (Jan. 4) to be simplistic, naive and narrow in scope. First of all, many feminists do stress that "traditional female roles" have merit and value. It has been the social meritocracy of the elite ruling class, not the women's movement, that devalued the female role in the home. This was accelerated by the Industrial Revolution, which sepag rated the home and the workplace. The rationale that kept women at home assumed that, as women were more nurturing than men, a stereotype perpetuated by forces of socialization and conditioning rather than biological fact. Yes, Tamarah, many feminists do feel that women Wendy Ajax have been cheated. One example is the issue of compag rable worth in the workplace, which is far from being resolved. The fact is, men are still payed more than women for comparable work in most cases. Does Tamarah find concern about this to be invalid? Her application of the Tom Sawyer parable suggests that she prefers manipulative and coercive techniques Editor: to honesty and direct address of task value, which is a When does law enforcement become extortion? January 17, 1989 Although it was already 2:30 p.m., I immediately telephoned Parking Services to find out what they were talking about I was told that I had parked in the pay lot near the Marriott Library without paying on the night of Dec. 13. 1 explained that I had been told during the summer that a $1 per evening parking fee had been started fof night parking, but when I tried to take a ticket one evening in the fall at the Union pay lot, I was informed the lot was free. I parked there almost every Thursday night during autumn auarter and was never charged. On Dec. 13, when I parked in the library pay lot, I assumed the same rules were in effect I did see someone in the dimly lit booth, but the ticket box was not lit and there was no sign stating hours of operation. Furthermore, the booth attendant did not attempt to stop me nor approach me, despite the fact that I parked close to the booth. I did my work and left-n- ot auite any more about this until I received Parking Service's charming Christmas notice. Now, you may be thinking, save your complaining for the appeal hearing. But this is where my major problem arises: I was informed that I had only until 4:30 p.m. that afternoon to appeal! Needless to say, I was outraged! I had lots of things to do that afternoon and arguing to a partial person about what I considered to be a specious ticket was not on the list The reason I am writing this letter is, because I am searching for others who have had similar experiences to help join me in fighting Parking Services. If you were told this fall that parking at night was free, or if you received a "booth-runner- " ticket timed so an appeal was de facto impossible, please call I want to fight this because it is the me at second time I have felt ripped off by Parking Services. In May 1988, several weeks before my graduation, I got ticket in the mail a copy of a and a demand for payment that was accompanied by a threat to hold up my graduation if I did not pay. I had no recollection of the ticket, rior had Parking Services attempted to collect previously on it. Since my $20,000 education was being held hostage, I paid the $20 they demanded. I felt this was a violation of Article 8 of the Bill of Rights that prevents the imposition of excessive fines, but I didn't want anything to mar my graduation. Now, once again, Parking Services is claiming that they can either impound my car or hold my expensive education hostage if I don't pay what I consider to be a specious $7 ticket Does anyone want to join me in fighting this?
