"We're going to put together a student health advisory committee and hopefully they can advise us on what students want" Rawlins stated. "It is a vital health "There was no controversy at all," Dalessio said. "A legislative group at first functioned as the sole proprietor of the condom sales, but when the school's administrators found out about their profitability they took over the machines." Whether or not an SDSU student uses the machines on campus is his or her choice. But the fact that they are available means the campus promotes good health and safe sex. Or does it? University of Utah officials appear to issue." Most U. students agree with the health side of the matter. Sexually active or not, selling condoms on the U. campus can be parallelled with the selling of other health items on campus feminine hygiene products for example. "How can we be actively involved in disagree. There is not one condom machine to be found on the U. campus and they are not sold at the bookstore or at Student Health Services. Joan Rawlins, administrative officer at Student Health Services, said current U. policy does not allow for the distribu- - fighting AIDS if we can't do anything about it ourselves," said one female U. student. However, many people feel selling condoms on campus is a moral issue. Dalessio said many colleges, such as age to condoms dispensed from a machine. "Abstinence is still the best method " the universities of St. Bonaventure, Oklahoma State and the University of Missouri are concerned about safe sex. Yet, when proposals for condom distr- ibution came before these school's administrators, they were rejected because of the moralimmoral implica- tions, Dalessio said. Dr. Harry Gibbons of the Salt Lake City County Health Department is outspoken on the moral aspects selling condoms on the U. campus. Gibbons feels the health side of condoms is not all it's cracked up to be. 'To call it (sex with a condom) safe sex is ridiculous," Dr. Gibbons declared. "We used to call it safer sex, now we call it less-dangero- sex." us Gibbons stated he is generally opposed to condom dispensing machines because condoms, like Twinkies, have a shelf life after which, if used, are ineffective and . potentially dangerous. He added while in the machines, condoms are exposed to varying environmental conditions, such as heat, cold or high, and low humidity. Such changing environmental elements can cause dam January 17, 1939 Gibbons continued. "I think making them readily available is conveying a misleading message . . . instead of 'safe sex with condoms, we should promote individual responsibility" However, it appears that profitability, not morals, is the main reason condoms are not available at the U. Gene Blackwelder, U. director of Auxiliary Services . and David Prentkowski, director of Union Food Services, said there must be a large enough demand condoms on campus for them to be profitable, or at least break pro-moti- , even. :" "If it's something we haven't had on campus and if there is a need we would definitely entertain Blackwelder said. the - ATTENTION talk THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY You are invited to review and comment on proposed revisions to the STUDENT CODE bringing it into compliance with Speech University Regulations PPM Regulations.
