My m wvLJt i Completion of renovation of Einar Nielson Fieldhouse is a little less than a year away. Originally plans called for completion in time for the beginning of fall quarter but things didn't progress as fast as was hoped. Opening date is now set for sometime in May or June of 1978. The facility, when completed, will house an equipment storage room for the recreation depattrnent's rental program of outdoor athletic equipment, nine handball courts, four squash courts, five indoor tennis courts and a suspended track. Other facilities include men's and women's lotker areas with each one containing a large whirlpool bath. An extensive weightlifting room is also in the works. Planning for the new athletic facility started in October 1975. Actual bids on construction were opened in January 1977. A total of 52,253,840 was allotted for the project. Actual construction costs are estimated at $1,957,200 with the remainder of the amount set aside in a contingency fund. Among the major considerations in construction of the facility is that of the handicapped. Sjxtial ramps, elevators and toilet facilities are to be provided for the handicapped to use. The surface of the tennis courts will be a multipurpose one, and the nets will be removable, so the area can double as a dance floor or portable bleacher space in case of a each of the courts to keep the balls within the court area. Class is being removed from the windows and will be replaced with plexi glass to prevent it from being broken by tennis balls. A flat track ten feet wide will be suspended from the ceiling of the facility. The surface of the track will be a polyurethane "astroturf track" for easy maintenance. According to architect Dal Allred. the track will be flat rather than cursed because of tennis and expense considerations. "The track is flat so it can be used as a spectator viewing area in the event of a championship tennis match," Allred said. Other construction under this project includes two new toilet facilities flanking the refreshment stand at the north end of Rice Stadium. "We hope to have the rest rooms ready to go for the first football game on Sept. 24." said Allred. Jurisdiction of the facility will fall under the Department of Campus Recreation- - Although available time for the use of the facility had not been determined, it should remain the same as is practiced at HPER. Mark leonida, spokesman for the recreation department, said, "Of course, it's a little early to talk about time available to the general studentbody, but the times should correspond to what is in practice now. The track and tennis teams will, of course, have priority during the winter. But we generally work together in establishing what time each of us will use the facility." The recreation department vill maintain a supervisor in the facility for security reasons and to watch for injuries. I'pon opening, reservation procedures will probably remain the same also, according to Leonida. The fieldhouse building itself, constructed in the 1930s, has sustained some structural damage. "The structural damage is in thebtickwotkand we are going to repair that," said Allred. "In actuality, the building itself is in extraordinarily good shape for as old as it is." Once constitution is completed, the building should last at least 50 years with regular maintenance according to Allred. the interest in new Coach Best preseason for ticket sales Ticket relation), community and alumni, and to the ticket deals on certain bleacher seats.
