Both games were close for a half, with the basketball game being tied at 38, and Utah holding a slim lead in football. But the prep cagers broke the game open late in the third quarter and the grid stars picked up early fourth-quarte- r touchdowns to forge ahead. The backet ball game was. marred by the absence of Danny Vranes who will play for the Utes this season. I le had to sit out because of a strained knee. The rate is course which over a goes up a scanty foot path to the top of the summit and down the other side of the mountain. Actually, the run begins at 4,700 feet, climbs to 9,400 feet and then goes bac k down to 7,200 feet. That is a 940 vertical feet per mile ascent as the first half of the -- 10-mil- e race is five miles. I don't know w hy I decided to run maybe it is like the conquest of Ml. Everest "Because it is there." The gun sounded and 88 runners and myself took off to heights unknown. The pace was brisk as I was hard after, only about a quarter of a mile because of the steep ascent. Very early into the race I could see that some of the runners had misjudged the pace and were starting to drop back. Up and up we ran. I couldn't believe I was really doing this. I figured that it must be a sort of madness. Finally, the trail proved to be too steep to run and we had to slow down to a slow, tedious jog or a best a brisk climb. I was continually watching my feet because one miscalculated step and down I would have tumbled 50 to even 200 feei already-breathin- upon some very uninviting rough rocks. The steep incline combined with the high altitude caused by breathing to come in gasps. My thighs were burning and my calves felt like balls of fire. Still we climbed on and on, over jagged rocks and muddy creeks, and through scratching vegetation and even prickly scrub oak. There weie about eight of us in a gtoup and we just kept plodding each othet on. In spile of the main times I would haw welcomed a test ihuhm of the slop, in fiont .mil in back tunncr of me kept me going against my Ik ttc t judgement. I had no conception of time oi distance. And I couldn't be lieve I could keep going on over such a long distance on terrain which seemed to me to be almost straight up at some times. Periodically, I would lose my footing and would fall to the ground. A couple of times I even lost my way, but quickly scurried bac k on course. After what seemed like an infinity, I caught sight of the the can you, lcause I am 1.1. And I even finished 2.Hih overall in a little moie than two bouts. But, then I discovered the pain of Death Row which I was sure was straight up. My legs ached from the long climb as I plodded up and up, determined to get to the top and breathe again if one can breathe easily at just under 10,000 feet elevation. Amazingly enough, 88 runners, ages ranging from eight to more than 50, out of 89 finished the race. And strangely enough, it didn't take me long to forget the pain because, in a moment of weakness and insanity I'm sure, I said, "I can't wait to n run the again next year.
