Your Man t1' In Washington In Strike Begins School Talk Parents Part Of School Scene As a national agriculture strike got underway Wednesday in the US, there was no way to determine just how County BULOVA effective it will be both natBy Josh Hawks North Park School It, is not unusual to walk " into our school on any day of the school week and see parents in different areas of the building tutoring children, listening to them read, or correcting papers. There seems to be an indication that parents are ready for a new cooperative relationship with the schools, that they recognize that education is a community undertaking. To say that parents need to get involved in their children's education does not mean that teachers are incompetent. It means only that many of the problems of today are so complicated that no one segment of society can solve it alone. A child's success as an adult still depends on the home, the school, the church, and many other factors. In too many cases, education no longer is viewed as an opportunity and a privilege, but as a right for which little effort is required. It is important for adults to feel that education does something for them and that they convey this feeling to their children. MM; : While the school experience should be, over all, a pleasant one for the child, there are certain frustrations which some children may not find pleasant. As parents and teachers we must help the child cope with these unpleasant times by showing them that not everything that happens in life is to our liking, but that we have a responsibility to do our work whether we like it or not. We must develop in our children the conviction that they are responsible, not only for their grades, but also for the way in which other people react to them as people. If we allow a child to believe that he or she is constantly "picked on" or treated unfairly in school, we are missing the opportunity to teach that child he is and all of his life will be responsible for his own behavior. We must teach children to have faith in the schools. The child is the one most hurt by our criticism of schools and teachers. He soon decides that learning is neither valued nor expected. x We should set aside a little time at home to really help with homework if it is needed. A short time of undivided attention is more valuable than any material possessions we can give our children. School is never a pleasant experience for students who are behind with their school work who don't know their times tables or are having trouble with reading. There is nothing that can take the place of the closeness and affection that goes along with being next to a parent or other adult on a basis. g It is a experience to walk through our school and see parents who will take time out from a busy day to help, not only their own, but someone else's child. As educators we often express to each other our admiration and appreciation for parents who truly care. -- one-to-o- ne heart-warmin- The Humphrey-Hawkin- s AN farmers are free to support the strike anyway they want.
