Show Page THE LEA1JEK C OAKLAND TIMES, Sept. 1. I77 Against Judge Memorial BRC Heads Field In Elwood Tourney iThe LEADER Action Continues Tonight The die-har- softball fan d er Valley if he tries hard can still find a game to watch somewhere in the Bear Riv- overs and mistakes right from the outset. One reason for the doldrums, Jacobsen feels may be an attitude that "winning is going to be easier" than it was last year because of the beefier front line. The Bears will be bigger, that's for sure. "We're big bit we're not real quick," Jacobsen said. Friday's season football opener against Judge Memorial could be a stormy baptism for a team which Bear River High coach Bill Jacobsen feels is better than last year's squad which proved competitive all year long even though they didn't pile up an impressive record. "I really think we're a much better football team than last year," Jacobsen said this week. "But we lack in a few critical areas-a- nd that's mostly attitude. We practice great one day then come back and we take it easy the next." The Bears travel to the Westminister College campus in Salt Lake to take on the Judge Bulldogs in a 4:30 p.m. contest Friday. Fans following the Bears can reach the campus by taking the 21st South off ramp, travelling east to 13th East then turning north. Jacobsen hasn't been as pleased as he'd like with his squad's progress thus far but acknowledges he's working with a lot of kids who got little or no playing time last year. He'll start five or six juniors. y He held prac-- I ce:- last week because he ( lin t feel the squad was accomplishing enough in the morning session. The second year coach doesn't feel his team is, as yet, disciplined as well as last year's squad which was remarkably free from turn- - nti much quicker than Chris," he said. The coach has improved his passing game in quarterback Blake Sandall, as well. "Blake is a good passing quarterback. That's what makes him stand out above Ned," last year's backup quarterback, Jacobsen admitted. Sandall will throw from a half spring out or full sprint out move-t- he tactic used most of the time last year. In fact, Jacobsen said, a drop back pass series won't even be in the book for the Judge game. "Blake runs the spring out as good as any quarterback," Jacobsen said. And when the junior has the chance he'll tuck the ball under his arm and go for five or six yards with the option to pitch out besides. Sandall suffers from a fault most young quarterbacks have, Jacobsen acknowledged, a desire to throw the ball deep too often. "We've got to be more pat- quarterback. Defensively, the Bears will go with Hurley and Brian Christensen at left and right tackles respectively. Lewis and Vance will be double duty moving to the ends of defense. Webb and Petersen will also go both ways playing monster and middle linebacker positions. Clayton Knudsen will likely draw the weak side linebacker post with Bruce Bowcutt getting the eye on the strong side. Cornerback spots will probably go to Bart Bowcutt and Ned Petersen, the backup quarterback. Mark Walker or Mike Giles will be at safety. In the defensive backfield, ient." And Jacobsen offered, "If Blake's not doing the job then we're going to bring Ned in." The Bears will run a Slot I formation putting just about everybody in the backfield in motion at one time or says Petersen "hits people pretty good." Bowcutt is "real small" but "plays the football real well." The cornerback picked off three interceptions in a recent team scrimmage. "As big as we are, I hope we're going to be able to establish a good solid ground W 9 W) i ll ti In Judge, the Bears go up against a team which played 12 sophomores last year. "All the coaches in the area say they're going to be good," Jacobsen said. Most give the Bulldogs and ; following schedule: 6 p.m. Tre 2nd vs Corinne. 7 p.m. Tre 6th vs SRC. 8 p.m. Tre 7th vs 20th. 9 p.m. Belmont vs tenders in their region. Offensively, the Bulldogs will look much like the Bears "with more options." Tailback is the strong suit in the Bear's backfield where Kyle Hardman has been pressing Ramsdell. Swingback is a question mark, Jacobsen admits. Ramsdell, who was at the position, may have to be moved back, he added. The Bears are back at home Friday, Sept. 9, for a 7:30 p.m. contest with Murray. They open season action on the road at Woods Cross Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. Although not the best for the fans, Jacobsen says he likes the afternoon contests. "I like it for a selfish reason because I don't have to sit around as long and get sick waiting for the game to start," he said. 307 DELIVERED FRI..SEPT.
