Show Scene 77 THURSDAY. B NEI .LIE V. JOHNSON Keao Mickelson. a farmer in the Bench area, is the only one of our Grace residents who is an artist in wood carving and he is a natural. He started doing this in about lira in the w inter when he had a little extra time, using pocket knife and chisel, having taken no lessons. recently showed his display of animal and bird He figures at Idaho State University in Pocatello, after receiving an invitation from the college. AMONG SOME of his outstanding works are big horn sheep, a bear, horses, moun- tain goat and whooping cranes. The latter is a set he is working on now. These are jnade of the popular woods found in this area such as quaken asp and popular trees. ZZZ get the effect that he wants for shading and indentations. One piece in particular is the Big Horn Sheep which looks like it is standing on little squares of granite. NOW HE HAS acquired more modern tools that a carver would use such as a chisel saw. acorn tools from England and 15 gauge flutes. He presented one of the Lamb and Lion figures lying together to President David O. McKay and a five buck deer to George Albert Smith in Oct. of 1949. Both were LDS church presidents. He received from each a nice book w ith their autograph.
