Box Elder County water should I apply to my lawn and how How much often? There are differing opinions when it comes to watering lawns. Rick Jones Missionary Farewell Set You can read in the Salt Lake papers and other sources that lawns should be watered deep and not very often. Those of you who have tried this practice in the Brigham City area and other communities next to the mountains have run into problems. In the Salt Lake area the soil is a heavy clay silt loam soil. These soils will hold about two inches or more of water in the upper foot. The second foot contains about the same material only more clay and will hold even more water. In the Brigham City area, the soil is made up of much coarser material such as silt, coarse sand and gravel. Our soils will hold from 2 to 1 inch of water in the upper root of the soil. The second foot is made up of rocks and gravel. This material will hold very little water. The water which is applied will run through into the rocks and is wasted as far as our lawns are concerned. During the hot part of the summer - from mid June through August - a good lawn will use about V4 inch of water per day in this area. Grass and other plants cannot remove 100 percent of the water from the soil and still live. When plants reach the wilting point, as much as d of the soil moisture is still in the soil. If we irrigate our lawns once a week there is no way we can hope to keep them green, as our soils will not hold that much water (one inches of and water). Unless you have hauled in a good layer of soil, you should plan to irrigate more often and apply less water than is recommended in Salt Lake. We lose a lot of water in the Brigham City g our area in gravel soils. 1.1TKY STRIKE BOWLING LEAtiL'E April 29. 1977 Hi Team Series Scratch: Massey-Ferguso- n 1953. Place some cans on the lawn with straight sides, such as tuna fish cans, and measure the amount of water you apply. This will help you decide if you are over or under irrigating.
