The Cubs stand 0 on the season. They recently came from behind in the final inning to pull out an 7 victory over 8-- 8-- Box Bear River High is in the market for a new head coach. Coach Paul Jeppesen was named head coach at the championprestigious ship school, Skyline, Saturday by the Granite Board of Education. Jeppesen will step into the shoes of head coach Neil Roberts who was lured away to become head coach of Dixie College in St. George after leading Skyline to two basketconsecutive state ball championships. The step is a prestigious move up for Jeppesen, whose long range goal is to break into the college coaching ranks, "We think it is a stepping stone for us," Jeppesen said. "We've got a lot of friends we've made here, but professionally we thought it was a move we had to make." The college ranks are 4-- 4-- where "we finally want to end up," he admitted. Jeppesen will take over a team which lost all five starters from the roster of the championship squad. But he will "be rebuilding" at a school with a studentbody of 2,027 to choose from, compared to the 560 or so students at Bear River. Jeppesen came to Bear River three seasons ago to replace retiring coach Durr-el- l Hughes. His first year he took the Bears to a state tournament berth after a nine-yelapse on the strength of a 9 record. The Bears stumbled by two points to Logan in a playoff game. They almost upset West, beat Ogden and were eliminated by Clearfield. The highlight of Jeppe-sen- 's brief career at Bear River has to be his second season when his squad fin ar 9-- ished third in the ament ranks and tough situation." When "all the kids have to play each sport" it becomes impossible for a talented youngster to specialize in one sport. It also cuts down the odds of finding those talented athletes as well. The new head coach is a graduate of Skyview High in Smithfield where he starred on the basketball squad. He went from there to Utah State, where he played guard for four years under Coach LaDell Anderson. Jeppesen later coached at Westside High School in Idaho before coming to Bear River. tourntook the Region One title with an 11-- 1 3-- record. This year the Bears compiled a poor record, suffering a series of close losses in a year which Jeppesen felt the team could have split That second year "is the best year I've ever had in coaching, but I hope there are better ones," Jeppesen acknowledged. The young coach feels satisfied with his accomplishments at Bear River. "I think we've done a pretty good job...We've made progress," he added. He points to the involvement of the younger kids in basketball programs as one mark of the progress. But Jeppesen acknowledges what most unbiased observers will have to agree with, that coaching at Bear River will always be "a 50-5- 0.
