Show The Streams Bear River hosts the Weber Warriors Saturday to lose out a somewhat frustrating 1977 baseball season. The Bears pounded out a flood of hits the last time the two clubs met to post a victory in the first half of the season. Standing at 7 currently, the Bears would like the win to make their season record a little more palatable. The local squad also has a makeup game with Logan to get in. Last Friday's contest was rained out in the bottom of the fourth with Logan lead- Shortstop Nolan Hess, the leadoff batter, leads the Bears with a very respectable .394 average and that doesn't include any hits in the rained-ou- t Logan contest. Hess has been to the plate more than any other Bear River batter in spite of the fact that he sat out the Box Elder game after taking a foul tip above the eye that required some stitching. Hess also leads the team in with nine. The veteran has made four errors mostly throwing - but has handled more chances than probably any other fielder. Second baseman, Gene Billings, a sophomore, has a bright future in store for him at the plate. He boasts a .321 average thus far, with three runs batted in and six runs scored. Billings, ironically, leads the Bears in strike outs with nine. Third baseman Ned Petersen, a junior, rounds out the .300 hitters for the Bears with a .308 average, three runs batted in and six runs scored. As a team, the Bears are batting .241 on the season with 62 hits in 257 at bats. ' Here are the averages for the starting eight and two pitchers: 3-- ing runs-batted-- in t 5-- 3. The Bears jumped to a lead in the first with a single by Nolan Hess, sacrifice by Billings, triple by Bob Payne and a single by Chris Webb. They added a third run in the third when Hess scored again on a single and an two-ru- n hit-lead- er error. The rain could have saved the Eears just in time. Logan jumped on Bear pitching and errors for five runs in the top of the four on four singles a triple and two errors. Bear River pitching has been strong this year, but not too durable. The Bears have gotten off to good starts in the early innings, but have been plagued by fourth and fifth inning rallies. Errors haven't helped either, the Bears have made 20 of them so far. Bear River hasn't been the most prolific team when it comes to scoring either. They've scored an average of 3.6 runs per game. But at least two of their losses were ' decided by one run. AVG. Certainly, the advance of opening day alleviated three weeks of anxiety and ulcer causing tension. And, it looks like the Saturday, May 14, opening will provide good fishing in the reservoirs and much better stream fishing than normally available on the opening weekend. Many areas which are typically inaccessible early in the season will be open and planted with fish. In general terms, the Northern Region is experiencing' unseasonably low stream flows and below normal reservoir levels. Causey Reservoir may fill by opening day and Hyrum is spilling. All other reservoirs in the Northern Region are well below normal capacity. Many stream sections are without water, due to irrigation diversion. No streams are high and turbid. All will be planted with exceptions of a few that are listed below. Many streams will be stocked heavily before opening day. It is anticipated that many streams will be dry or at low levels later in the summer and not suitable for stocking. Some reservoirs that receive catchable size trout may not be stocked early because they are too low to be reached by a fish Specific Forecast: Box Elder County: 1. Willard - Slow for walleye. Good to excellent in marina areas for crappie. 2. Small streams will be planted for the opener. .167 Friendly Hour The Friendly Hour bowling league ended its season with a banquet at Maddox Cafe on May 5. The ladies enjoyed a dinner with a short business meeting conducted by league president, Marge Tanaka. Vice Linda president, Thompson, presented trophies to the winning members following the dinner. Winning first place for the season was the Spirits of '76 Team. The Champion's team is made up of Jan Gardner, Ellen Huggins and Jeanne Jones. Second place honors went to the Scrappers, made up of Esther Storrer, Marge Tanaka and Billie Dawn Johnson. or C A ME D mm V 2 V"VV - IIMI - I LUU I 4 mj oz.
