"I thought Chris played the best of anybody in both games," Jeppesen said, defensively and offensively. Against West, Webb picked up five goals and two for two from the line for 12 points. A number of the points came on a backdoor play where Webb was fed the ball underneath all alone. The play worked four or five times during the night. "We've definitely got to get more out of our post men," Jeppesen said post game. After two road losses in the first outing of the season, Coach Paul Jeppesen isn't euphoric. But then, he isn't ready to throw in the towel either. The Bears lost the first night out to Tooele 70-6- but stayed in the game until a late quarter cold spell gripped them. The second night they managed to stay within two points of West until about the four minute mark of the final quarter, picked up some foul calls attempting to trap, and eventually lost 0 ed 4 and 2 points respectively in the two contests. "I was pleased with some of the things we did," Jeppesen said. n "Tooele was in form, they just ran the hell out of us," he added. The coach felt Tooele was simply in better condition and that his squad has a way to go yet. But with an 8 football season, the Tooele basketball squad has probably had some time to gear up for what they hope are brighter prospects indoors. The Bears played hard in both contests and handled the ball well as Jeppesen had felt they could at the outset. "We didn't have hardly any turnovers and didn't throw many passes away," he said. Jeppsen has already pointed out one weakness of the team which he's working eir foul shooting. The team's first two performances left some room for improvement. Against Tooele they shot an even 50 percent on 12 of 24. They improved on that the second night shooting 65 percent on 13 of 20. mid-seaso- well-execut- 58-5- 1. The Bears are at home this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to host Judge Memorial. Poor shooting was one problem in their first outing. Against West, the Bears went something like 19 for 60 for a cool 31 percent, according to Jeppesen, and few ballgames are won by shooting like that. They shot somewhat better the night before against Tooele. .. Guard Chris Webb got one of the few accolade's 0-- Against West the two big men, Todd Grant and Barry 3-- A Bradshaw accounted for points between them. They did better at Tooele putting 21 on the scoreboard. Grant played "well" in the Tooele game netting 17 of the 21 points by the big men. Bradshaw, according to Jeppesen, had poor games in both outings but should get his feet under him. He scor- only 11 on-th- figures they Jeppesen must shoot The LEADER t T :j r J !! ?. "We were just letting him have the ball too much," Jeppesen said. "We needed to deny him the ball." Work on shoring up the defense in the middle is on the schedule. At West, Wedd and forward Tad Morrison provided much of the scoring threat with 12 and 13 points respectively. Mark Williams canned one goal but went 5 for 6 from the line for 7 points, and Hess picked up six points. Grant had 9, Bradshaw 2 and Roger Norr, 2. Trailing much of the first half by four to six points, the Bears came back to knot it up at 28 all at half on the strength of buckets by Morr- ison. Neither team ran away with things in the second half as West pulled out to a 0 six point lead at a minute or so into the final 46-4- 24 Tooele 12-2- Morrison closed the margin to two and the Bears came out attempting to trap following a time out but picked up quick fouls sending West players to the charity strip to collect on four of six tries to push the margin back to six.
