Show age 12 THE TIMES. Oct. LEADER-GARLAN- Game Moved Up 14, 1976 The only blight on the To Skyview game was the Tuesday score. But the Bears had some extra bright spots to encourage them as they face Spanish Fork. Darrin Kerr started for the first time as inside linebacker and did a good job. He'd been passed over but patiently waited telling the coach, "let me get in and I can do a job." John Hurley was back in Spanish Fork, lakers Next Up For Bears Football can be a cruel sport not so much for the physical violence it encompasses but for the invisible pain it can inflict on a 17 or old youngster dressed like a gladiator in protective armor. For the Bear River high school gladiators the cruelty is the frustration of coming within inches of victory only to lose. Skyview inflicted the pain most recently in their i victory over the Bears. T ieie s no disgrace in lov. ig if you give your all. Bui there's not much satisfaction either. Try tellinu Curtis Kidman, who r;m his heart out against Skyview, that it was just a Mame. Kidman, who carried L'.i times for a 134 yards in a performance that deserves to be remembered, will like 21-- ly remember only the touchdown he thought he carried over but which the referees ruled was short. Or, the fumble that stalled a Bear River drive. Quarterback Mark Williams sitting dejectedly on the bench as Skyview stalled away the final seconds probably won't remember the 138 yards passing on 13 of 29 or the two touchdown tosses and the slick extra point toss to Howard Rawlinson. It was one of those games that you can say you won everywhere but on the scoreboard. The Bear's 350 yards total offense which almost doubled Skyview's 180 testified to that. There's not much satisfaction either in valid claims that the Bears could easily be right now rather than 1 the Bonneville vs Bear River game originally scheduled for Friday, Oct. 22, has been moved up to Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. in Ogden. The Bears have clinched a playoff berth in their race with Logan. The Grizzlies have one win and face Bonneville tonight in their final league contest. But even if they win, a doubtful prospect, the Bears go to the playoff by virtue of their win over Logan. The playoff game will be scheduled probably either Tuesday or Wednesday Oct. 26 or 27 on a neutral field, according to Bear River 3-- The Bears, after starting like gangbusters, have dropped three in a row. The Roy loss was expected although not quite so severely. Box Elder's win was disappointing. The Bear's played poorly much of the game but still almost won. Skyview's win was devastating. Bear River's tough-luc- k football crew will try to sharpen their teeth on a foe Friday with a possibly tournament playoff game staring them in the face around the corner. The Bears travel to Spanish Fork for a 7:30 p.m. encounter Friday evening. They need a win badly if for no other reason than to get their adrenalin flowing for the playoffs. Against South Cache, the Cubs will come up against a ninth grader with high school passing skills. The South Cache quarterback "can roll out left and throw right with accuracy," Coach Myrl Perry said. The Bears go into the game coming off a 4 loss to arch foe Box Elder. The game was much like , Saturday's Wyoming ';vbt' Brigham Young contest. The Cubs let Box Elder dominate the game until the final quarter, then came up with too little, too late. Box Elder scored twice in the first half, going into the half time period with a 14-- 0 lead. Then, in the third quarter, the Bees scored on Hy-ru- inter-mounta- 20-1- Rose led the day with rushing, backed up by Shawn Anderson with 40 yards. Richard Mortensen had a good day catching some nice passes for good gains for the run from scrimmage to take a 20-- 0 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Cubs set up a score with two passes to Kevin Udy. The a 105-yar- d first went for about 27 yards. The second resulted in a pass interference call that put the ball on the five-yar- d line. The Cubs then got the score on a half-bacpass from Rose to Udy. The Cubs came back to score once more within a three minute period. After a e successful kick gave the Cubs the ball on the Bee line, Rose moved it to the 20. Rose ran the ball in on the next play and followed it up by running for a two point conversion to close the score to The Cubs came back with e kick attempt another and felt they had recovered the ball. But officials gave the ball to the Bees who ground out the remaining time. Cubs. Defensively, the Cubs were without the services of inside linebacker, Chris Thompson, who is usually good for ten or twelve unassisted tackles a game. Jeff Bishop led all tacklers with six unassisted tackles. "Morrie Larson played another heck of a ballgame," Coach Perry said. Larson got through to the quarterback a couple of times to drop htm for losses of if to 20- -' mm yards. k on-sid- Perry said his Cubs should have come away with at least a tie. Payson, a team the Bears beat in the opening game of the season, is in first place with a 1 record. Spanish Fork beat Payson in their encounter. The Spanish Fork team is defensive minded running a 2 with a four deep secondary. They field a huge nose guard standing 6'2" and 270 pounds flanked by tackles that run 200 pounds, according to Bear River Coach Bill Jacobsen. "If we can win" this week and do a real good job against Bonneville you might see a team that'll at 'least make the ,r, he added. "The only thing, , we can't afford is inluries." In spite of the heartbreak-ers- , Jacobsen said the Bears "still have confidence." "The kids know how bad they played against Box Elder and still almost won and how well thev olaved asainst Skyview," he noted. BEAR RIVER end Nolan Hess, number 84, hauls in a pass while preparing to defend himself against a Skyview tackier in their recent game. Hess had himself quite a night, hauling in two TD passes. should be at full strength in the playoff. He could go both ways by then. Little Nolan Hess sparkled offensively sharing the limelight with swingback Howard Rawlinson as they hauled in passes. "If Nolan played with a team that threw more you would really see Nolan stand out," Jacobsen said. Hess gave the Bears their first sore against Skyview late in the half on a leaping catch at the four followed two plays later by a catch in the end zone. Hess also hauled in the second TD pass in the second half. Chris Webb pulled in the two point conversion pass seconds later. Late in the fourth quarter Kim Hales intercepted a Skyview pass and carried it to the Skyview 16. Kidman moved it to the one foot mark on second down. Kidman then crashed the line for what the referees ruled was no gain. He swept right on fourth down and got undercut at the one yard line by a charging linebacker. The goal line stand seemed to portend worse things to come. Skyview got the ball and marched 98 yards to the score that combined with two first quarter scores, including a touchdown return of a Bear River punt spelled the difference. 4-- 5-- semi-finals- Set Yonr Sights At Sea tve "lu. on ft) .J, (Q)GD Tbese Speciafs JTa? --i nfl 257-834-8 ,'' SffiiXb IMP to3 On XD2 Eng?
