That fact should insure a good turnout of Republican state political office seekers to parade themselves before the local state convention delegates and the public. Republicans will convene their convention Tuesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the Bear River high school auditorium according to party chairman Doug Parsons of Brigham City. The only actual voting at the convention will be to determine whether either Ray Hall or Wayne Jensen, both of Brigham, can garner 70 percent of the delegates and avoid a primary battle for the Republican nomination for House of Representatives seat in District 61 which comprises all of Brigham City. Less than 70 percent of the vote will send the two men into a primary runoff. No keynote speaker is planned, but candidates for county, state and national office will be allowed to address the convention. Senator Miles Ferry of Corinne will also speak briefly. The party will also adopt a party platform. Democrats will convene their convention July 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Brigham City Community Center. There is still some slim hope that Cache might agree to join in. Commissioners there were expected to meet Tuesday with a committee which was created to look into the mental health needs of that county. Cache commissioners asked Box Elder to wait on the requested letter until after the meeting. In any event, Cache's reluctance to move has cost Vetntb BwiBQiw fa 'Weiry High Mi ion 7 $100 nt the district its priority position for funding - a position which took three or four years to earn. Chase said he understands that money earmarked for the district has been allocated to another county ' already. But while the county's priority has dropped, Chase said there is some hope of getting some "wedge funds" from the federal government which were created when the feds changed their fiscal calendar to start in September. If the county does go it alone, Chase said they would be seeking between $200 and $300 thousand dollars to expropand mental health gram. Originally the district was eligible for funds up to a ceiling of $970,000 about. Chase emphasized again that the figure was a ceiling and that county commis- sioners had the power to decide how much money they want to seek and how large a program to operate. He said the county would ask Rich county if it wants to join in the venture. Pdmtf, w 3 JLr ItlH HilHilkHii.lt s s i m k h p v, sj t tf. w. w m m m m m i IIL- - X I ir" s. i . t, j. Sheriff Art Redding made that assertion recently before a crowd of PTA leaders and parents at Bear River high school. The occasion was the installation of new high school and junior high PTA officers. Redding said he made application for funds to create a Youth Bureau a move which put him in competition with the Brigham Police Department which has operated such a bureau for the past two years and was seeking the funds itself to continue a third. "I was told we didn't have a problem in the county and all the problems went to Box Elder high school...," Redding said. But Redding said Bill Evans of the juvenile court has indicated that based on referrals the Tremonton-Garlan- d area "has more problems" with drugs and alcohol. "We don't want to hassle the young people," Redding said, "but we do have a serious problem." He described "keggers"-be- cr busts such as the one last spring near Beaver Dam--a- s "kind of like a party" for drug sell- tup-crwa- re ers. Sheriff's deputies have found drugs at many parties, he added. As for beer, Redding said his office has confiscated as high as 12 to 13 kegs at a beer party. Confiscation not only hurts the illegal purchasers who lose their deposits on the kegs, but hurts the companies themselves.
