AUG. 28. 1975 Of Thank 1 --Carol express our neartfelt gratitude and thanks to all our relatives, friends and neighbors for their kindness and help during the death of our loved one Steven R. Conlin. For the GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY FISHERMEN CAST for bass and bream as sun burns away morning mist over Alligator Bayou in the Louisiana delta southeast of Baton Rouge. A network of canals has made delta swamps and bayous more accessible, but damaged region's ecology. Canal Network Alters Lousiana Delta Man-Mad- e Some "highways" were hacked out with canoe paddles at the turn of the century and are siill in use. But the modern machinery that has cut wider watery routes through the state's Mississippi delta region is changing drainage patterns and increasing the salinity of the wetlands, says Dr. Donald W. Davis of Nicholls State University. .Hunters and trappers pushing into the state's vast delta used pirogues, small lightweight craft able to float in a scant three inches of water. Where there were no channels, they hacked paths with their paddles through swampland and floating vegetation. THESE CANALS, known locally as trainasses, gradually widened and deepened over the years through frequent use, the flow of water currents, and storm activity, the National Geographic Society says. Dr. Davis found that a trainass in Barataria Bay, started half a century ago when one man dug a ditch a foot deep and 40 inches wide, has grown until now it is a channel 10 feet deep and 200 feet across. Today hundreds of miles of traverse the and marshes of southern Louisiana. They are used for agriculture, transportation, and logging. The earliest canals were trainasses swamps carved by duck hunters and were just wide enough for a single boat. During the 1920's trappers extended the trails and carved out new ones. Not long ago, a retired trapper told a National Geographic writer what those years were like in the swamps and bayous. "When I was 18, 1 shot over 100 ducks every day for 14 days in a row and sold them to New Orleans restaurants," related Isedore Bar-roi- The way it used to be, why, it was country that God invented for himself." CHOPPING A path with a paddle was too slow as more people entered the water region. Paddles were replaced with shovels bent into d hoes, then with knives and rakes. long-handle- mudboats inboard driven by engines skimmed across the swamps, tearing up vegetation and leaving fresh channels in their wakes. These have been followed boats with armed with pairs of cutting blades at the bows, and Bateau-shape- d d ditch-diggin- g canal 12 miles long in a single day. marsh-dweller- s marked the areas of their trap lines with cane poles and their neighbors respected these boundaries. But the trappers didn't own the land, and the people who did began leasing it to hunting parties and oil and logging companies and others. The newcomers cut new canals and widened old ones. And where the trappers had been careful never to cut across a ridge, the new pathways followed direct routes that cut through ridges and other natural obstacles. U.S.Economy Faces Shortage Of Capital Funds The American economy is faced with a vast shortage of capital funds. This transinlates into sorely-neede- d vestment capital to produce 10 million new jobs by 1980. According to some estimates, the nation in the next decade will require $4.5 trillionmore than three times our current gross national product, all we produce in goods and services each year. From where will the money come? It NEEDED MANAGE! Y0UI io Modular Hones, lacsai Motels, Inches, Property, benefits commission investment Call One of the major sources of such funds is the profits that business plows back into its enterprises. But corporate profits have been declining as a percentage of national income from 6.8 per cent to 3.3 per cent in 1973. The Chamber of Com- merce of the United States, along with top economic advisers of President Ford, believe our tax laws are mainly at fault because they discourage incentives to capital formation. By cvJoighbors thanks to all our relatives, friends and neighbors for their kindness and help dur-in- g the death of our loved one.
