A three course dinner was served at one large table the centerpiece being a pot of daffodils in bloom and the color scheme green and yellow was very beautifully carried out in both menu and table decorations, and a most enjoyable time was had by all ' present. POLITICS AND PERSONALITIES Doubtless more than a majority of citizens will remember this last session of the 71st Congress in terms of drought relief appropriations and veterans bonus legislation. It is an enThe tirely erroneous impression. drought relief controversy involved a sum that was only a drop in the Treas ury bucket. More importance attaches to the bonus act, upon which there is so much division of opinion that no final verdict is possible. But the real signficance of the session lay in these things: The Wagner Unemployment Bills which are generally regarded as marking the birth of a new and saner era a possible remedy for the business in our economic life and constituting cycles which bring with them a recurrent depression; The Muscle Shoals fiasco in which President Hoover renigged on his good intentions expressed in the 192S campaign and threw the government operation bill back into the Senate which cotud not rally a Tvote to help effect its passage over the Executive veto; death of a comThe on the Norris agreement promise Lame Duck Constitutional Amendment, smothered by conferees of the House and Senate; The revelation that the House could actually break with the President, as it did over the bonus ;that Andrew Mellon has so lost prestige that a reference to "the greatest Secretary of the Treasury since Alexander Hamilton" was greeted by Congressmen with jeers and hisses; and that the new Secretary of Labor is sufficiently to at d or political-minde- d measinferior an to substitute tempt ure for a better unemployment bill simply because the latter was tagged with a Democratic legislator's name. two-thir- ds -- last-minu- te short-sighte- An American Goes to Geneva Although the United States is not a member of the League of Nations, we often cooperate in its work. Another example of our active interest in League projects is shown by the participation of Edward T. Hunt of the Department of Commerce in the League's investigation of the causes of economic depression. Mr. Hunt is secretary of President Hoover's committees on recent economic changes and on unemployment. With the representatives of 14 European countries he is now at Geneva studying the various national and international factors in the present crisis with the hope of preventing its recurrence. At the first meeting of the conference, Mr. Hunt emphasized the fact that factors governing the long duration of the present depression should be studied as well as the original causes. He estimated that there are four and a half or five million un employed in the United States, but stressed the improvement in business since the beginning of the new year. The world at large is thinking constantly of the two great questions of security and prosperity. With large-scal- e production in all civilized countries, open markets and general purchasing power must prevail to bring prosperity to all. It is gratifying that all nations are begining to realize this and are trying wholeheartedly to work out a solution together. I story you will want Cost $1.85 MILLING CO.
