Vaughan Is Awarded Am, Legion Service Medal GET-TOGETHE- MEETING OF AMERICAN LEGION WELL ATTENDED BY DISTRICT AND NATIONAL OFFICERS AS WELL AS DISTRICT DELEGATES-AWA- RD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THIS COMMUNITY GOES TO LOCAL MAN LEGION AUXILIARY HONORS MRS. MINNIE WAHL R One of the highlights of the district convention of the American Legion held in Helper last Sunday was the presentation to R. J. Vaughan of Helper of the first annual community service award of Carbon post 21. The medal was struck in bronze and displays the spread eagle emblazoned with the Legion emblem, and suspended from a ribbon of the the Legion's new policy, which has its purpose the securing of a full measure of justice men. for Thruout the meetings the Helper school band furnished a number of ensemble and solo selections. four-poi- AUXILIARY Legion colors. The local post of the American Legion determined that outstanding service to the community should not go unrewarded and recently evolved the plan of awarding this Legion medal annually. However, should no person appear president. deserving of this honor it will not be awarded. Carbon post 21, in honoring R. J. Vaughan thru District Commander F. P. Fisher of Helper, who made the presentation, recognized him as being outstanding among his fellow men in civic tivities, giving of his time and services in civic work "over and beyond the call of duty." This civilian award by the Legion is comparable to the distinguished .service cross of war service. Mr. Vaughan, as guest of honor at the banquet, spoke on "Americanism." I In attendance at the local meetings which were presided over by District Commander Fisher were National Committeeman Darrell T. Lane, Department Commander Leslie Blackner, Department Adjutant Otto A. Wiesley, and Depart ment Judge Advocate Worthen Attending the Legion Auxiliary meeting was Department Fresi dent Mrs. Worthen. The morning meeting held in the Strand theater and open to the public was well attended, with interesting discussions by Adju tant Wiesley,- Commander Black ner and District Commander Fish er. The Legion Auxiliary noon ban quet in the Grill club rooms was a most enjoyable affair, with bits ol comedy breaking up the more serious discussions by Legion lead ers. L One of those unpleasant things which happen every in a while but which still are is the fact that approximately the country to spread a little good cheer and happiness among the children of Helper community. He will greet the kiddies in front of the city hall at the appointed hour and from the smiles on the faces of those now planning to be numbered among those present it seems most likely he will have to call in a number of members of the American Legion to help distribute the candy and nuts so he can get away in time to complete his visit to the many other places where he must go Christmas eve. Because of the light snow fall of recent weeks he may have to leave his reindeer up in the hills, but Santa himself will be here in person. And it is hoped every kiddie in the community will be there to see for himself what old Santa Claus looks like when he starts out to visit the homes of all good children on Christmas eve. In keeping with the Christmas spirit and in preparation for Santa's visit a large and gaily decorated Christmas tree has been erected in front of the city hall, made possible thru activities of the American Legion and other local civic little once news five carloads of people from Carbon county rode the Monday morning train into Salt Lake to do their Christmas shopping.
