Show V 16 Hilltop; July 24, 1997 Military members can transfer TRICARE Prime enrollment Queen Pillowtop 75th Medical Group Because of the needs of a highly mobile military population, both active duty and retired, the Department of Defense, in cooperation withTRICARE contractors, is implementing a solution to the current problem of maintaining Prime enrollment when moving from one region to another. Effective July 1, the first phase of enrollment portability was initiated involving active duty family members in Prime. The second phase, involving retirees and their family members in Prime, will start d fall 1997. Split Prime enrollment will be available for retirees and their families starting spring 1998. Split enrollment permits retirees and their family members to enroll in Prime in different regions and pay only one enrollment fee for the entire family. As far as active duty military personnel are concerned, it is important for them to process in and out of the TRICARE Service Center when they arrive at a new base and when they depart a base. Also, active duty members must follow the same guidelines for obtaining care as any Prime enrollee. There are important benefits to Prime portability and split Prime enrollment: Cash savings for retirees and their families when only one enrollment fee is required for family members in separate regions. It is extremely important to remember that enrollees who disenroll before leaving their old location will be covered under TRICARE Standard. Beneficiaries who remain enrolled in Prime and seek medical care not authorized by their previous Primary Care Manager and TRICARE contractor, will have to pay the much higher costs under the option. It is recommended that beneficiaries moving temporarily to another region for 30 days or more transfer their enrollment to their temporary residence in the other region to maintain the continuity of their Prime coverage. Although they may appear healthy, children can develop serious problems that include learning disabilities, impaired hearing, decreased growth and brain damage. test can detect increased blood levels in children. At Hill, children are tested at 1 year only if they have increased risk factors for exposure to lead. The Pediatric Clinic uses a questionnaire to determine if children need to be tested. To date, there haven't been any children with elevated lead levels from living in base housing Lead exposure usually comes from ingestion of paint or water from lead pipes. Most homes built before 1960 and some homes built before 1978 contain lead paint. Lead paint in good condition does not usually pose a hazard unless creates a dust when rubbed; for example, opening a window causing paint surfaces to rub against each other. Tiny pieces of chipping or peeling paint are dangerous if eaten. Infants should be prevented from chewing on painted window sills, cribs or playpens. Individuals shouldn't try to scrape or sand lead paint. Local health departments may be able to test a home for lead paint. Maintenance practices for base housing prevent lead paint exposure and the water is routinely tested.
