But this day wasn't just for daughters, sons were also on hand to observe their par- ents at work here at Hill. "You may be sitting where your par- ents are today, doing exactly what they are doing," said Defense Megacenter Ogden commander, Col. Alfred H. Whitley. Whitley continued, "Although you are not in the classroom today, you will be learning from the best teachers you have, your parents. When it's all done, you will have learned about the diverse workforce we have here at Defense Megacenter Ogden and at Hill Air Force Base. You will also have a better understanding of what your role is as respon sible citizens and future employees." The Wizard of Waste was there to entice students into actively participating in reducing waste by recycling, reusing or burning. He wrapped up his presentation by giving each person a recycle packet along with a tree to plant, explaining that trees clean the air and reduce noise pollution. The youth then traveled to the aircraft production line to witness modification of 6 and repair of CI 30 aircraft, and then to the environmentally safe paint removal of the bead blast facility. After having lunch and spending time with their parents, the young visitors were taken on an extensive tour of the megacenter, which included a virtual excursion of the World Wide Web and an Asynchronous Transfer Mode demonstration. The children also received certificates signed by the commander, for participating in the event. Although most parents feel they don't want schools to be the primary provider of moral values, teens report that most parents don't seem comfortable addressing these issues. Researchers have also found that teens who became pregnant were, on the average, much less likely to have good discussions with their parents than those who weren't sexually active. To become an approachable parent, parents first need to cultivate a good relationship with their children. They must also be knowledgeable and approachable. A parent could have great advice about the hazards of early sexual involvement, but if the advice is not conveyed in a warm and caring way, it will likely be rejected. One thing is clear, parents can't wait until their children are teenagers before they begin building relationships of trust and sharing. Children learn best when they are young, and parents need to answer questions when they're asked. For more information or to register call Ext.
