Show May 23, 1996 5 Hilltop Times Commanders' Memorial Day Messages From the Secretary of Defense is a time to remember with Day Memorial pride and heartfelt gratitude the women who have given their lives for our great country. On this Memorial Day, we must remember that freedom often exacts a terrible price. Ever since we first struggled for our independence more than 200 years ago, Americans have been willing to pay the price for freedom. The voices of these past heroes echo in our memories today as we celebrate their spirit of courage and patriotism. You men and women of today's armed forces are carrying on that spirit of courage and patriotism. By pledging to keep our nation strong and ready, you honor those who have gone before you. Today, I join in honoring the memory of those who have served before you, and I join Americans everywhere in thanking you for your service to From the Commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center Monday, we will again commemorate Day. For many, it will be a day off work or out of school. There will be sports and leisure activities as well as sales to help us get ready for summer. But let's stop and think about why we celebrate this day. In 1868, "Decoration Day" was set aside as a day to honor those who died in the Civil War and to decorate their graves. The name was later changed to Memorial Day and the occasion set aside as a time to honor those who died in all wars. On this special day, we need to stop and remember that the freedoms we enjoy worshipping as we please, speaking out against tyranny, are freedoms choosing political candidates given to us through the sacrifice of others. The men and women who fought and died in the wars that shaped our nation and our world did so to keep us free. To the military and the civilian workers, my thanks for your constant, steady, dependable efforts to keep our nation strong and maintain a strong defense. Mav we pause and remember those who went before and gave their lives to make this holiday celebration possible and keep our futures bright. Maj. Gen. Pat Condon On America. William E.
