With that, 17 BDU-claairmen aimed their s downrange and fired round after round at targets 25 meters away. These 17 shooters were among the more than 200 competitors in the elementary level Excellence in Competition firing match held at Hill recently. Herman, from the 75th Security Police Squadron, was the executive officer for the four-daevent at which 13 of the 200 competitors earned Air Force Bronze Badges signifying superior marksmanthe ship. There were two categories M-pistol competition on May and the rifle competition on May d M-16- y 9 10-1- M-1- 6 17-1- "In addition to people from Hill, we had shooters from bases throughout the West, including Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; Edwards AFB, Calif.; and F.E. Warren AFB. Wyo.," said TSgt Michael Buttner, NCOIC Combat Arms Training and Maintenance, 75th SPS. In the M-- 9 category, there were three rounds of firing, all with the shooters in the standing position. The four rounds in the 6 category were based on the positions of the shooters: standing, kneeling, sitting and lying down. Shooters had various time limits in each category ranging up to 60 seconds per round. The maximum possible score was 500 points. The minimum score needed to qualify for the badge was 455. "I was pulling a little low today, but' the practice did me good," said TSgt. Steve Sherman, a competitor from the 419th Fighter Wing. "Every military member ought to be familiar with firing weapons." MSgt. William Dawes and TSgt. Dale Neal, reservists from the 419th Security Police Squadron, served as official scorers helping their counterparts from the 75th SPS stage the competition. "We've been involved for the last three years," Dawes said. "This is important because it gives individuals a chance to see how good at they are at firing weapons. You never know when you might be in a situation to use one in combat."
