Step-famili- es This seminar will deal with the many issues and problems that can develop when single parents with children remarry. Frequently when parents remarry many of the issues that surface when a parent is lost by divorce or death are not resolved. The remarriage then introduces a host of new issues that the newly combined family must deal with. Remarriages are. generally, more difficult to manage than first marriages and the incidence of failure is much higher. Partners and children bring to the new marriage their unique y perspective. For instance, in loss another for result living may children. Their previous special relationship with their parent in a single-parestep-famil- nt family is now challenged by at- tention given to the "outsider," which is what stepparents are frequently viewed as. Ronald Hunsaker, a marriage and family counselor, will conduct the workshop today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the support center. For more information call Ext. Hunsaker is also contracted to provide profes- sional A al services to families. Appointments can be made with him by calling the Family Advocacy Office at Ext. Estate planning Living trusts are gaining popularity because they offer significant ad- vantages over wills. Upon your death, your will is submitted to the probate court, a branch of the District Court. The probate court conducts proceedings begun by a representative of your estate to prove the validity of your will and determine the proper distribution of your property. The filing of a court petition, notices and schedules, and publication to creditors are required. Unlike wills, living trusts do not go through probate. This allows your estate to be settled faster and with less expense and less publicity. Many people don't think of their properties as estates, but they are. Homes, securities, insurance, business ventures, pensions and retirement funds, bank accounts, inheritances and personal possessions together form an estate. A prudent person may have accumulated sizable assets without realizing their value. He or she may feel they are in good order, only to have his or her heirs bear the burden of probate. To find out more about wills and trusts, attend a seminar led by Keith Backman, attorney at law, on June 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Preregistra-tiois required. Call Ext. to register or for more information. n |
