Show 14 Hilltop Times June 1, 1995 Frustrated with traffic at West Gate? Driver awareness, courtesy can help iliilllliilllll by Sue Berk Hilltop Times staff Everett Watts, personnel specialist, is frustrated with the morning traffic at the West Gate. The problem not being able to merge into the left lane after coming north off the ramp and turning right to enter the base. Watts said the solution could be as simple as education and driver courtesy. "The traffic has always been a problem." Watts said. "But, before the signal lights were installed, one out of eight or 10 drivers would allow cars to merge. Now it's more difficult." Other people are feeling the same frustration. Watts said. "I've talked to several people who work with me and they have the same problem even though we all start our work day at different times. "People should realize that most employees using the West Gate work in the 1200 Area buildings," Watts said. "This means cars need to turn left immediately. It would help if drivers would let cars merge so they can make that turn." Although Watts realizes there are cars funneling in from all directions, he has a few suggestions that might help the traffic congestion: Drivers on the ramp turning right shouldn't come to a complete stop at HHfflSil the yield sign. They should put their left turn signal on and idle slowly forward and be in a position to merge when drivers coming from the west allow. People coming from the north should consider using the Roy Gate to alleviate some of the congestion at the West Gate. "We just need a little education and common courtesy," Watts said. The 75th Security Police agree the traffic can get snarled during peak areas. "A lot of people out there are frustrated with the West Gate traffic problems." MSgt. Mark Coggin, law enforcement superintendent, said. "There is heavy traffic in that area every morning and during lunch time, and driver courtesy would certainly help." David Ferguson, traffic engineer, also realizes the West Gate has traffic problems. "Nothing short of relocating the West Gate will relieve the traffic congestion," Ferguson said. "We are trying to do a lot of things in a small space. We feel we've come up with the most convenient and safe system we can at this time," Ferguson said. "Maybe people could adjust their travel time. Coming in five minutes early might help the situation," Ferguson said.
