Gary Pomeroy Air Force News Service WASHINGTON (AFNS) Air Force installations around the world will observe Earth Day 1994 April 22 with a wide range of events aimed at showcasing the service's achievements and ongoing commitment to preserve and protect the environment. Earth Day "is an ideal event for us to focus public attention on what we're doing to preserve the environment," said Maj. Alec Earle, chief of the Air Force's pollution prevention division in the Office of the Civil Engineer. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has expanded from a predominately American movement to a worldwide event that draws people from all over the world who are concerned about population growth and pollution. "The Air Force will spend about $1.5 billion in fiscal 1994 to carry out its commitment to the environment," Earle said. The Air Force's environmental program also established in 1970 has expanded over the years and includes four main areas, Earle said. "We work to prevent future pollution by chang: ing the way we acquire and maintain weapons systems and operate installations; comply with existing environmental laws; restore previously contaminated sites; and vigorously manage our scarce cultural and natural resources," Earle said. "We do this through an aggressive program to transition new and innovative technologies into the Air Force to assist in preventing pollution, compliance and restoration," Earle said. The service also educates Air Force people on environmental responsibilities and works with other Defense Department agencies, civilian industry, state and local governments on environmental matters.
