Individuals fill out a questionnaire on lifestyle practices to include blood pressure and cholesterol measurements done at the time of the screening. The information is then entered into a computer program which provides a printout about health risks for that individual. The screenings can be done at your organization or in the Health Promotion Office. Health screenings at the Thornton Community Center are offered at least quarterly for a small fee and are open to all base per- by Capt. Susan Lori Irons Health Promotion manager The Hill AFB Health Promotion Program sponsors a variety of health-relate- d programs for individuals as well as organizations. The programs are geared toward helping individuals learn about and practice healthier lifestyles. Programs and information are available in six focus areas: tobacco use, physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, substance abuse prevention, and cancercardiovascular disease prevention. The Health Promotion Office also helps coordinate health observances and recognition days. For example, the Great American Smokeout is coming up on Nov. 18, and materials and information on how to promote the event are now available. Call the Health Promotion Office for more information. Active-dut- y personnel and their dependents, retirees and their dependents, and civilian employees are eligible to use services available through the Health Promotion Program. Organizations desiring workshops, seminars or screenings need to call the Health Promotion Office, Ext. to coordinate the event. The programs listed below are available to both military and civilian personnel, and are free unless otherwise stated. Call the Health Promotion Classes using nicotine replaceOffice, Ext. ment patches are available to active-dutpersonnel. Civilians must obtain nicotine replacement patches from their own physician. The course is eight weeks long and begins in January. Nutrition. These lectures are geared toward the organization's needs. Presentations run from 30 minutes to an hour. Topics can include general nutrition, diet and cancer, fiber, fat and cholesterol, weight management, and just about anything else related to healthy eating habits. The Health Promotion Office also has computer programs for diet and exercise planning, available by appointment only, sonnel. B Blood Pressure Screening. Screenings can be scheduled at your organization to fit your needs. Periodic screenings are also held at the community areas and free automatic blood pressure machines are located at the fitness centers, CBPO and Military Pay. Two machines are available to rotate to your organization on a quarterly basis. Information can be obtained through the Health Promotion Office, Body Fat. Periodic screenings are held at the Thornton Community Center at a cost of $5 per person. This service is free to military beneficiaries through your medical provider. All those screened at the Thornton Community Center must pay the $5 fee. Call the center for dates of the next screening, B AIDS Education. A dynamic instructor is available to come to your organization for briefings on the topic of AIDS. The program offers information in an informal setting to encourage discussion. Call the Health Promotion Office to schedule, B Back Injury Prevention. This program is offered through the American Red Cross and the Health Promotion Office. This ARC course will help your staff learn how the back works, the causes of back injury, and how to prevent back injury. Call ARC to schedule, B Prenatal Education. Prenatal education is e available from the Obstetrics Clinic and several Presources. Contact the OB clinic at pared childbirth classes are offered by the OB Clin1 or ic staff.
