The USTs were closed in place on October 22, 1991 as part of a basewide effort to upgrade andor minimize the number of USTs on base. The USTs could not be removed due to their close proximity to Bldgs. 227 and 228. After the closure, on August 22. 1991. the asphalt covering the USTs was removed. Discolored soils were discovered beneath the asphalt, indicating a possible release from the tanks. Subsequent soil sampling confirmed this. The State was notified of the release by the Environmental Management Directorate's Restoration Division in a letter dated August 22, 1991. Based on further investigation, it appears that approximately 2.100 cubic yards of soil were impacted. Ground water has not been affected as a result of the release. UST used to store new and spent The site contained a 2,000-gallo- n steel Stoddard Solvent. The UST was removed in December 1989 as part of a basewide effort to upgrade andor minimize the number of USTs on base. During removal, a 14-inc- h diameter hole was detected in the tank and there was evidence that a release had occurred into the soils surrounding the tank. Subsequent soil sampling confirmed this. The State was notified by the Environmental Management Directorate's Restoration Division in a letter dated December 21, 1989. Based on further investigation, it appears that approximately 134 cubic yards of soil were impacted. Ground water has not been affected as a result of the release.
