Hill AFB seemed the perfect place for the Hill family to have a reunion and the recent air show gave them the perfect excuse. of Maj. Ployer "Pete" Hill-s- on P. base whom the after Hill, Ployer .was named and his wife, Dorothy, had planned to be on hand to help the base celebrate its 50th birthday, and his children Mike, Doug, Chris, Gail and Lisa, and grandchildren Dana, Julie and Spencer, decided to make it a surprise family reunion. "It's a treat to come back and see ' old friends and make new friends," said Mr. Hill, whose last visit here was five years ago. He said the base is continually changing and that he has a great ap-- . preciation for the new projects and developments he sees here. He said he's always loved the service and so it seemed natural for him to follow in his father's footsteps and serve his country. He spent 27 years in the service, retiring in 1974. A retired lieutenant colonel, Mr. Hill served in World War II as a radar observer night flyer (navigator). He flew in a 1 Black Widow. He entered the service in 1945 and went to Japan just as the war was ending. He said on his 21st birthday peace was declared. Mr- - Hill said that when he was assigned here, he tried to downplay the "I met with the press once when I first got here to discuss things and then just let it die down and lived a normal life," he said. Mr. Hill was 11 years bid when his father died in 1935 while testing the original model of the B-1- 7 long-rang- e heavy bomber at Wright Field, Ohio. "He was a gentle man and a gentleman," said Mr. Hill of his father. "I still miss him." "He was hardworking, kind and nice the type of father most children would dearly love to have. He was firm and I remember being punished, but his punishments were just," he said. Mr. Hill's children are living up to the examples of excellence set by their father and grandfather, each excelling in his or her chosen profession. Mike is the vice president of a solvent savings and loan. He and his wife, Ellie, have two children, Dana and Julie. Doug is a pilot for United Airlines and a major in the Air Force Reserves assigned to Norton AFB, Calif, He has one son, Spencer. Gail is the manager of her husband's orthodontics practice. Chris is the director and administrator in one of the largest urology clinics in the Southeast United States. Lisa is a partner in one of the largest advertising firms in Southwestern Florida. ."We've designated Mike to come back for the base's centennial" said Mr. Hill.
