Docs prescribe aerobics, headsUp editor Despite the inconvenience and discomfort of wearing the chemical ensemble, military experts agree that the more time Reservists spend wearing a gas mask and chemical gear, the more proficient they become doing their jobs during a chemical exercise. Wearing a mask and chemical suit a few hours a few times a year isn't enough, they say, to build up top proficiency. The solution is to wear chemical gear for long periods of time many times a year. In winter, a chemical suit may be a comfortable addition to fatigues and act like a wind breaker on frigid flightlines. In summer, it's a different story. Col. David P. Jahsman, commander of the 419th Tactical Hospital, says heat stress is his major concern during summer exercises and the Operational Readiness Inspection planned for September. "Our main way of losing excess heat in a warm environment is by sweating it out. The chem gear hinders evaporation and in order to prevent overheating, we need to take some precautions." . Some suggestions are: Teach your body to perspire better and more efficiently by doing aerobic exercise with a high water intake in hot weather. Start at least 10 days before the ORI. Work out one to two hours daily and drink lots of water.- Camouflage slatod for fell '90 Mandatory wear of camouflage fatigues in the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard will be Oct. 1, 1990, Olive green fatigues will not be authorized after Sept. 30, 1990. Exception to this policy will be the olive green field jacket, which can be worn through Sept. 30, 1992. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service will discontinue accepting special orders for olive green 507 fatigues Oct. 1. 419th Tactical Fighter Wing officials estimate 75 percent of the unit has been issued the new camouflage uniforms. water to sweat out this weekend, ORI by TSgt. Bruce Hills A The Army and Air Force Exchange Service is the ninth largest American retailer with 1988 sales of $6.2 billion. AAFES operates 17 businesses on Army posts and Air Force bases: main Be well hydrated when you arrive for the ORI. Avoid fatigue. Rest when you have time off and during work breaks. Avoid alcohol. It dehydrates and contributes to fatigue. Don't take salt tablets. They are unnecessary and can aggravate heat stress. Drink more water, less sodas, and fewer sports-ai- d type drinks, which are poorly absorbed and delay the hydration process. Three to four quarts of water per hour may be necessary under conditions of high temperatures and muscular exertion. Having done all these preventive measures, be alert for signs of heat stress: weakness, lightheadedness, nausea, headache, confusion, loss of judgment and personality change, Colonel Jahsman said. "Severe heat stress can produce convulsions and loss of consciousness. "If you recognize any of these symptoms, try to get to a cooler area, rest and drink more water. If you are not better quickly, get help from our medical support in the Base Operations Casualty Collection Point or hailing our roving ambulance." Remember, he said, to stay hydrated with water, acclimate yourself to hot weather aerobics and be able to recognize the symptoms of heat stress. "We can perform effectively in adverse conditions and win this ORI. That's our goal," Colonel Jahsman said.
