Show sports HILL TOP TIMES July 10, 1967 33 Falcons struggling wifh hardball By Ralph C. Jensen A Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office Winning is tough to come by for the Hill AFB varsity baseball team. The Falcons have a string of losses and are looking for another win to chalk up to their credit. Brigham's Peaches rolled over Hill to a 13-- win, while the Hyrum Hornets blanked the Falcons 10-Over the July 4 weekend, the Falcons were dropped three times. Talent laden Belnap blanked the Hill nine 14-- and Smithfield took a double-heade- r and Brigham's Peaches managed to capture a 1 lead by the third inning before racking up another five runs, taunting the Falcons. Hill scored solos in the first and fourth innings, then added a pair in the sixth and seventh. The Falcons scored eight runs on as many hits. Brigham opened the game in the fourth with their five runs then damaged Hill efforts with another four in the finale. Joe Flieghman hit a homer for the Falcons. Hyrum pitching wasn't kind to the Falcon batting corps, getting 15 strikeouts in five innings of play. The Hornet pitching staff allowed only two of their own. Horhits while collecting a net baserunners reached home once in the second inning, four times in the third and tacked on five in the fourth inning. "Their pitching was excellent," said head baseball coach John Edrington. "This guy was a lefthanded knuckleballer. He had the style of Sandy Koufax with great speed." Over the holidays, Hill didn't control the diamond at all, getting thumped by 14-- Ron Watson was tagged with the loss and was retired from the game after taking a shot on the ankle from a hard hit ball. 6 0. 8-- 5 0 4-- 2. Abbott is homer king Dave Abbott lived up to his advance billing on the softball field, smacking five home run dis- tance softballs to capture first place in the home run derby. In a field of nine hitters, Abbott was last on the list and outfielders positioned themselves outside the chainlink barrier to shag his missiles. Each batter could swing at 10 pitches, Abbott pelting five outside the limit, Todd Peisel getting hold of a pair of softballs for the distance and Don Eberlin sending one rocket to the fence. Smithfield had a tougher time with Hill, but were able to win the twin bill. "We were in the game all the way," said Edrington. "We played a lot better, but couldn't quite put it all together." Kortwright was given his second loss of the week, but managed to record 18 strikeouts for his efforts. Hill started the ball rolling with three runs in the first inning of play and Smithfield countered with a pair. The Blue Sox jumped into the lead in the fourth inning with two runs, then added another four in the fifth. Hill added another solo in the fifth and Falcon stallwart Flieghman banged a homer in the seventh in a losing cause. "The second game we had a tough time getting going," said Edrington. "We had another good game of pitching; our hitting suffered some however." In the nightcap, Hill managed two hits in the fourth and sixth innings, scoring twice in the sixth. The Sox scored in the second inning, then added a pair in the fifth. Their final tally came in the sixth on a solo shot that cleared the fence by Gardner. Morse was given the loss for Hill, but managed 15 strikeouts in the effort. The Falcons were tabbed to play this weekend in Provo, Utah, but the southern team has dropped out of the league. Belnap managed four runs and as many hits in the second inning, adding another in the third. They extended their lead in the fifth inning with three n markers and another runs in the sixth.
