Fr The ( ommcim litvinning this wwk, with tlie closing thought of l..ft wcek'a talk, vts may say mntidcntly, tliht w itli nil diffemirevt of nutures mul purpows, tlicro nre (tome truths which HiHal to nil ulikn. There will rievor lie n time, there never can bo conditiona, when vice and virtue, ns tluwe terms ore commonly undorntooj, eiin change places. No majority vote, or unanimous vote of men can ever rob virtue of its reward, or give to vice a of unalloyed happiness. harveet If heaven is a place, the pathways of vice Co do not load it; if it is a state, a condition, the practice of vice can never produce it. As there can be but one straight line between two given points, eo there can be but one direct way from any soul to heaven; and of course that must be a narrow way. One may turn in any direction outeuleof that one narrow way, and miss heaven; and that is what the liible means when it speaks of of the broad way that leads to death, and the ruin of the soul. This is not an unusual dectrine in the world. There is but one way from where any man starts to any given goal of If a man starts out in life to get rich, there is one nnrrow way to wealth; but there are unnumbered ways to failure- and such ways are as broad as the world. suc-cph- MOKK MKM H.WK FUI.K.I) than have passed through a long business life without failure. We might say that it is easier to fail than to succeed in any given aim. Counting chances it is s so, for there is but one chance for while the chances for failure are innumerable in the comparison. Some people say that if they had been making the world, nnd planning for .humanity, they would have made it easier to do right than to do wrong they would have made it so that it would have Iteen easier to succeed than to fail. And that would mean, of course, that it would be easier to get to heaven than to miss it. To some that seems like a beautiful theory; but the theorist seems to hint that it is not, and cannot be real. Let us see. The Bible story of history is that in the garden of Eden were two sinless beings. That beautiful garden and the world was open to them They could go anywhere, do anything, and the light and joy and and puiity and peace of heaven would be around them they would breathe ita air, would feel its influences, and en joy its happiness. Only one spot on earth was forbidden to them; only one command, one danger signal eat not of one tree. But poor humanity suc-cos- hn-ha- STARTED AT ONCE for the forbidden tree; the only way to ruin was the only way they really chose of their own free wills. If men were left to plans of their own devising they might plan to have all space heaven except one small city somewhere in space. That city might be enclosed with walls and its great gates might be closed and locked. But the experience of the race leads us to suspect that even if such were the case, masses of the people would go straight to the bolted gates of that walled city and knock for admission. Men make laws, and they try to make conditions such that they can obey the laws, and that only a few or the most unfortunate, or most depraved or vicious, And will ever be found transgressing. yet prisons are crowded with inmates, courts are kept busy with the throngs who turn from the broad way of obedience to seek out some narrow way of transgression, while a lenient public sentiment and indulgent otlicers of the law pass unnoticed multitudes w ho rush on forbidden ground when a better and unforbidden way lies beside the dangerous enclosures. Perhaps, after all, the present system is as good as any thut men could devise. But now we are ready to assert that the Creator has ACTUALLY MADE IT FA.HIKB for any man to do right than to do wrong. It is easier for any soul to get to heaven than to miss it; that is, if it is easy for a soul to move in harmony with the nature into which it is born. It m Mi. AND TRINITY CHURCH. If one atumbltM in that way, the liviue helper in thereat once to lift him up and assist him on Lia way. There are no promisee of help to those who are out of the way. If men utirt out for ruin, the world may above them along on the downward way, but no one helnjthein. They must go aloue on that broad way, though the way n thronged with multitudes like themselves. Auot her fact is that the w ay to heaven is straight and narrow, it is for the aoul like the railroad track to the locomotive. What can the engine do if it get off the track? What if an engine were to complain that it waa shut up to just one narrow road. It muist travel that road day after day. It passes through val lets, but it is Hot at liiierly to explore them; it climbs over hillsand mountains, hut it cannot turn from its one iron track to see what liea beyond on either side. And then one would answer: The track waa laid at great excuse for the one purpose of making a way for the engine. Without the iron track the engine would be of no nse, and no one would make an engine if there could not le a track laid for it to run on. And this illustrates the prise, don't idle your time away, and if we are of any importance t ub make it known. A Sifkrer. Hardware at rwt.
