We have seen the mountains several times before, but never when they priared as majestic and imposing as morning ot the lHh as we came bv the Kock Island route into Colorado Springs, which lies nestled at the foot of that historic mountain, 1'ike's l'e.ik. the ruggedness of whose time wrinkled ami storm scarred face was softened and made beautiful with its covering of The snowy summit was run Enow. mounted by a halo of reflected sunshine, like an aureole above theheadof Titian's Madonna, or like the whilenaaa of the "ice glare" in the sky, that indicates to sailors the presence of a large body of iceong before seen. After a delay of seven hours caused by the wreck of a freight train in our advance, we reached Colorado Springs, where we were met by a very dear member of the editorial profession well known to the Journal readers, who hail come "00 miles to meet the "associate" and accompany her to Ogden. After refreshments at the "Antlers," we took the electric line for Manitou six miles distant, passing through an almost continuous city. From this line one gets n glimpse of the Garden of the Gods. At Manitou a large and expensive building has been erected by a bottling company, where the soda ami iron mineral waters are bottled in immeiiHe quantities for shipment to many points in the L'nited States being highly valued for their medicinal qualities. One of the principal objects of interest in Manitou, is the railroad commencing near the L'te iron spring and terminating at the summit of Pikes Peak, a distance of nine miles, and reaching an elevation of over 11,000 feet, every foot of the steep grade affording magnificent views. The railroad is modeled after the Mt. Washing-- , ton road. It has three rails, the center one being a cog rail, in which the one drive wheel of the locomotive, a cog wheel, catches a secure hold. The cab of the little hunchbacked engine is about two feet higher than the front, in order that the boiler may be about level on the steep grade. The fare for the round trip is . Trains will commence running as soon us the tourist season opens. Manitou is a Mecca for tourists. In the evening returning to Colorado Springs, the city of beautiful homes, we comfortably settled ourselves m a Pullman for a thirty-sihour ride over the continent's great divide toward the setting sun. We reached Leadville, the city of mines, and murders, the first morning. It is said ot Leadville that every nicning they had in early days a dead man for breakfast. As it was "only tive o'clock in the morning we did not see the proverbial dead man, but he was forthcoming at presume the proper time. We breathed easier as we left Leadville and the high alti tude. We climled llaggernmn's pass at an altitude of 11,280 feet before noon, this is the highest point at which any railroad crosses the divide. Looking up the side of the mountain could be seen four road beds winding one above another, over which we successively passed to reach the summit. Looking downward, snow clouds could be seen below. But we in the clear, cold atmosphere of the high altitude, possessed then, ns ever, with the consciousness ot recti-tvdwere above the i etty cares and strifes of life, and reminded that we were mortal, only by a slight dizziness of the head, caused by the rarified air of this altitude. A severe snow storm prevailed the day. during The charm of transition from 6now covered peaks to tunnels and snow sheds, with glimpses of delightful mountain scenery was only equalled by the quiet beauty of the valleys cosily nestled between the mountains' rugged sides. The Colorado Midland takes one over the Buena Vista pass, and by the Mount of the Holy Cross where "the plowshares of God upturned the sod," and left His Glen wood impress there, through Springs and innumerable points of interest landing us at Grand Junction, the terminus of the Colorado Midland, in time for dinner. Here we became passengers on the Rio Grande Western, finding excellent accommodations and Bervice in a tine Pullman and proceeded to make ourselves comfortable for the remaining fifteen hours ride. LioufTe cars are run on both of these lines for convenience of travellers who may not wish to leave their cars for refreshments. Over this road one passes the weird scenery of the Grand river, where the mountain avalanches.spring torrents Bnd fitful winds have framed Btately castles and forts, chiseled out grotesque tU'ures and excavated mysterious caverns.
