Eugene Yim, deputy chief, Munitions Test Unit, at the top of a steel tower located in the munitions testing compound Directorate of Maintenance. The tower was built in the early 1960s and was used for impact testing of bomb fuses and other air munitions components. After searching for an idea for a creative reenlistment ceremony, he decided to be sworn in at the top of tower with the view of the the base in the background. Theodore L. 70-fo- ot Squadron offers diversified support to Air Force mission By TSgt. Charles Klein 2849th Maintenance Headquarters Squadron The 2849th Maintenance Headquarters Squadron here has a broad responsibility in supporting the overall mission of the Air Force. The squadron provides documented high resolution test data for determining the reliability parameters for missiles, small rocket motors, and other explosive components used by the Air Force. This mission is accomplished by 120 diverse misprofessionals specializing in siles, munitions, aircraft, instrumentation, and photographic career fields. The individuals conduct their sophisticated and, for the most part, hazardous duties on base and geographically separated locations: Utah Test and Training Range, Dugway Proving Grounds, and various other isolated areas. The Munitions Test Unit performs age and sur- state-of-the-a- rt veillance testing on the Sidewinder, Sparrow, and Maverick missile rocket motors, Minuteman and Titan II missile components, and many other tactical and strategic air munitions items in the Air Force inventory. The unit provides pertinent test data to the Directorate of Materiel Management engineers for fur- ther analysis on the serviceability of items tested. The Missile and Munitions Test Unit manages $300 million worth of missiles, munitions, and test- ing equipment at Lakeside, and is responsible for the storage, handling, instrumentation and static firing of missile motors, including intercontinental ballistic missiles and tactical missiles. The unit provides technical assistance to the Directorate of Materiel Management engineers in testing munitions and aircraft munitions release systems. The Photo Optical Unit provides still, real-lifand high speed aerial photographic data for munitions testing projects. The highlight of the mission is covering airborne chases, including both simulated combat practice at and the UTTR and Dugway. The unit also assists the 6514th Test Squadron when requested. The squadron has been part of Hill for several decades and it has provided important logistics support to the Air Force to achieve its overall mission.
