Show HILL TOP TIMES IO Thundoy, July 3, 1986 CompuverS' a onew fool, for iechinikol 5llusflriflirs By Chris Baierschmidt Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office Technical illustrations are going from the drafta pilot proing table to the computer screen-unde- r Hill AFB. at gram Robert Davis, Automated Technical Order System manager, explained that the project to switch many of the manual operations to computer was assigned here four years ago from Air Force Logisn tics Command headquarters, AFB, Ohio. Wright-Patterso- Warner Robins ALC, Ga., set up a similar system this year based on Hill's test program. Others are planned for San Antonio ALC, Texas; Oklahoma City ALC, Okla., and Newark AFS, Ohio. The first computer was installed here in December 1984 by the contractor who designed the ATOS center. Since then, personnel in the technical illustration unit have proved that they could capture data and store it electronically. Future plans call for electronic distribution of technical illustations to base organizations and, from there, transmission to bases worldwide. "Our pilot was a success," Mr. Davis said. "We have the technology to get out of the paper world and into electronics." The ATOS center set-u- p in building 1236 started with one computerized wprk station. It has grown to include two stations, a laser scanner, a room for technical editors who proof all work prior to final typesetting, and a computer room for related hardware and storage. Each work station accommodates one illustrator, who has three methods for converting a drawing for electronic storage. Both stations plus the scanner rvnn are tied into a central computer but can run on their own separate power during energy failures. Technical illustrator Richard "Buzz" Sawyer is among four of the seven illustrators in the unit to use both the manual and computerized methods. He believes that terminals will never fully replace the "Our pilot was a success. We have the technology to get out of the paper world and into handwork. "The computer is just another tool. There are things you just can't do without the table," he said. Technical illustrators generate the drawings needed for a technical order. They know how to draw according to regulations and how to illustrate the TO most effectively for, as examples, the flight or repair manuals. The number of projects each year varies, as does the number of illustrations needed for each project. Mr. Sawyer said the unit spends about 85 percent of their time illustrating changes to TOs. The balance is spent working directly with engineering drawings, a photograph or the object to produce an original on the drawing board. Changes are where the computers excel. Illustrators can call up an existing TO of an object or weapon system from storage, make the revision, and then store it again for future needs. "The old method was start from scratch or cut and paste," according to technical illustrator Jim Kilburn. "We'd do an illustration in sections, cut out the sections to be changed and insert the new information." Computers also make it easier to meet a deadline, especially if it's a time compliance TO or an emergency when the unit may have only three days to complete a series of changes to safety TOs. There's one more benefit to the computer world. "I can wear white again because we never get smeared from the ink," Mr. Sawyer said. .
