Show 34 HILL TOP TIMES Friday, November 9, 1 984 n famf v focus I CHAMP-U- exfleiradls S CHAMPUS can now help pay for ambulances used to transport patients from civilian to military hospitals everi when the cost exceeds $100. Claims processors will begin handling claims under the new rule Jan. 1. The change became effective Oct. 23. The civilian hospital can be inside or outside the hospital's health care zone, but the military hospital must be the closest one to the civilian hospital, according to CHAMPUS spokesperson Sylvia Sullivan. Previously, CHAMPUS shared the cost of ambulance transfers exceeding $100 to hospitals only when the patijnts were being moved from a rural ursralbulleoiniee or remote area to the nearest hospital, or from a hospital that could not provide necessary treatment. Ms. Sullivan, said the new rule could help save money for military families by making it easier for patients to get treatment in a military hospital. Cost to CHAMPUS for the extended ambulance coverage is expected to be minimal since additional costs of local ambulances will be offset by the savings in patients using military instead of civilian hospitals. Ms. Sullivan noted that CHAMPUS does not cover ambulance costs if a military hospital orders the transfer. In this case, the military hospital will cover ambulance costs. s and boats airplanes could qualify Additionally, under the new rule as ambulances when the pickup point is a long distance from a hospital or when the patient's condition requires quick hospital admission.
