Show HILLTOP TttttS 9, 19S4 (SOT'dyei' thin the unit, data on the degree of drug or alcohol By MSgt. Richard D. Lloyd Social Actions Perhaps you are in one of the units that the Base Social Actions staff has visited recently. If not, our staff may be visiting your unit soon on a Social Actions Unit Staff Assistance Visit. In our past visits we have found that some base personnel have had mixed feelings about our visits. Some are a little nervous about the visit; others are pleased or excited. Those who view the visit as an "inspectionget the jitters, while those who know the intent and purpose of the visit are anxious participants. Therefore, we would like everyone to un- derstand what we do and why. First, let's look at WHAT we do. When Social Actions "invades" the comfortable security of your duty section, we do three things. In the first phase, we distribute surveys to ran- domly selected unit personnel. These surveys collect information on how well individuals from different cultural backgrounds are being treated wi- - J CHEVROLET J mftdm an 7 abuse in the unit, and how well individuals on rehabilitation programs are supported by peers and the chain of command. Once the survey data has been tabulated, the SAV team briefs the commander on the survey . results. Trends sometimes appear in surveys, and this briefing provides an opportunity for the commander to formulate questions for the team to ask , during the second or interview phase. In this phase, members of the Drug and Alcohol staff and members of the Equal Opportunity and Treatment staff meet with randomly selected unit personnel. As in the surveys, information gathered from the interviews is reported to commanders anonymously. In the final phase, the SAV team takes a look at unit administrative records. We look for trends in promotions, PME selections, Article 15s, UIFS, involuntary discharges, alcohol-relate- d incidents, d incidents, PRP actions, duty roster assignments, OJT successes or failures and other areas we deem necessary. drug-relate- m?By: When all t.hrPA nhnsps art rnmrTof o the foam compares trends which surfaced in surveys, interviews and the adminstrative review. This comparison of information enables the staff to get a comprehensive, reliable and objective picture of what unit personnel are happy with and other areas the commander may need to look at. Let's consider WHY Social Actions does SAVs. Unlike an IG Inspection or a Management Effectiveness Inspecion, a Social Actions Staff Assistance Visit is usually not mandatory. Some commanders choose to brief the unit on the results; others do not. In essence, the Social Actions visit is a service provided for commanders to assess the unit's human relations climate, to help your unit function most efficiently. So the next time someone tells you Social Actions is coming to do an "inspection," make a correction. Let that person know it's an opportunity to assess the unit. The success of a Social Actions visit depends upon the quality of voluntary input.
