Riordan Senior Enlisted Advisor The dress and personal appearance of our people is declining again. My observance of the increasing number of 0 Air Force Regulation violations and reports of violations from first sergeants requires that I bring up this subject. I believe there are two primary causes for increasing incidents of 0 violations. The first is that many people, especially supervisors, are not aware there is a new AFR July 18, 1980. new The version contains some changes that were not highlighted by asterisks or explained in the "Summary of Changes" statement in the back of the regulation. Some of the changes are: AH service uniform combinations and utility uniforms are authorized for wear year-- " round. The parka may be worn with the service uniform. The blue maternity uniform is mandatory for pregnant women. Previously, they could wear civilian clothes in lieu of the service uniform. Placement instructions for the enlisted metal grade insignia have changed. Placement of badges, etc., on the mess dress has changed. Requires the wear of studs and cufflinks with the mess dress. Wear of uniforms is restricted in y employment. Uniforms for officers as well as enlisteds are listed. Provides guidance on uniform items authorized for wear with civilian clothing. Gives comprehensive identification of 35-1- 35-1- 35-1- 0, ; . 35-1- and wear instructions of organization, functional and distinctive clothing. Hats must be worn while operating a bicycle, moped or similar vehicle. Prohibits wear of utility uniform off base for extended shopping, eating or socializing. Women may wear small, conservative white pearl or silver spherical earrings with all service and dress uniforms. They may not wear them with utility, distinctive or functional uniforms, i.e., hospital whites, food service whites, etc. 0 cause of ;. The second primary violations is change in the weather. During changes in seasons, we historically find strange uniform combinations and less than neat appearance. Frequently observed are: Underwear peeking below short or rolled sleeves. Sweaters being worn as an outergarment outside the duty area or exposed through the service coat or outergarment. Shirt tails exposed below field jackets or flight jackets. Parkas, field jackets, lightweight blue jackets not buttoned, snapped or zippered. Flight jackets or field jackets worn with service uniforms. Scarf not tucked under the outergarment. I ask your help in getting word to all of your people that there are new AFR 0 changes. I feel we need to reach first and second line supervisors as the most significant key to bringing our people up to standards. You will see a steady stream of uniform and appearance articles in the bulletin and base paper; help me get the word out and reverse the trend I now see. Only fools would let themselves be swindled and tricked into handing out their d money for obviously phony deals. Right? Wrong! Successful con artists are experts in human psychology and behavior. There is no end to the ways in which intelligent, and otherwise aware people can be swindled everyday if they are hit with the right scheme, at the right time, by the right Something for . nothing: The something you get for nothing usually is nothing. Contests: Be sure they are not just a 2849th hard-earne- well-educat- ed "operator." Frauds come in a dazzling array of shapes and sizes, but a general description of what to listen for should help you spot the fraud. Cash: Why cash? Why not a check? Whenever you are asked to transfer sizable amounts of cash be extremely cautious. Secret plans: Why can't you tell anyone? Worry if you're asked to surrender anything of value in a secret deal. Get rich quick: If you play along with the promises of money and power you're probably becoming a victim of or a party to illegal activity. Investigate such claims thoroughly. " "come on"" where everyone "wins" something. There's usually someone somewhere swindling it. Home improvements: Beware of the itinerant roofers and driveway refinishers with special deals. If you're not familiar with a company check its credentials. A perennial favorite is the "carpenter" who wants a down payment on the job so he can "buy supplies." You'll never see him agaia Contracts: Read every contract you sign; don't be pressured! It's unfortunate and almost unbelievable but homes have been lost, legally, as a result of signing a mere television repair contract. If you sign a legal contract you have almost no recourse in the Murts. Don't be rushed. Never sign a contract until you have thoroughly read it and had it looked over by your lawyer, bank, or other appropriate expert. The legitimate salesman will always respect your wishes. Keep an eye out for the phony bank examiner, who asks you to withdraw a large amount of your savings, in cash, so he can - 1 secretly check the honesty of bank employees.
