Savannah, Ga., southernmost town of the original 13 States, took the news with mixed solemnity and joy. At noon on July 8, 1776, after copies were printed, the Declaration was first read in public. Only a small crowd of Philadelphians gathered. That night, however, the document was read again to a much larger group as bells pealed and bonfires lit Center Square. precarious The celebrations gradually spread throughout the colonies as post riders, coach packets, and coastal vessels carried the momentous news. It took more than a month for the word to reach many cities and hamlets. In New York, an express rider delivered copies to General George Washington on July 9; at six that evening some 15,000 troops lined formation to hear the up in hollow-squar- e in announcement sight of the enemy fleet. "The Fourth of July is Americans' traditional day of celebration, a chance to remind ourselves of the heritage we share with each other and with the men of great spirit and wise vision who brought our Nation into being. "But July Fourth should also be a day of reflection. Freedom, the ideal which created our Nation and continues to give it meaning throughout the world, has flourished in human history far more seldom than we would like to believe. , , "The work of freedom can never be finished, for freedom is not a temple that is completed when the last stone is in place, but a living thing that each generation must create anew." Collard Take safety along when on vacation By Edward D. Sawaya Part 2 of 2 Parts In the last article, the potential vacationer decided that the odd jobs around the house could wait until fall and a "get away" trip was too expensive and hard on the nervous sytem. The last choice for an ideal vacation would be the great outdoors. Outdoor recreation is not only fun, but it is educational and healthy. As in any form of recreation, the outdoors has many hazards. Getting lost in the wilderness, poisonous reptiles, insects or plants, fire, water, climbing, firearms, sharp cutting implements and falls are some of the dangers associated with camping and outdoor recreation. Whenever you travel, dangers will be lurking underfoot and overhead. Some of them will kill. Any one of them will ruin a well-planne- d vacation. Preparing for an outdoor recreation trip is extremely important. A planning list of items to take along will form in your mind if you sit down and carefully envision each activity for every day of the trip. Make sure you will be completely equipped in the way of bedding, food, utensils, shelter and accessories. Of extreme importance is adequate emergency equipment such as a first aid kit, snake bite kit, flashlight with extra batteries, compass, warm clothing, insect repellant and perhaps a portable fire extinguisher. Just as important is getting the car in shape by having it serviced and safety checked. Don't try to squeeze one more trip out of those old tires. If the tread is worn to of an inch, or likely to be before the trip is over, replace them. one-sixteen- Some of these dangers can be eliminated, but others must be recognized and avoided. Dermatitis caused by actinic rays, evidenced by dilation of the capillaries and even overstrained kidneys possibly developing into toxemia or shock and even death, is the much joked about "sunburn." The outdoors will produce a bumper crop of blistered, aching, bleeding vacationers. Possibly millions will fall victim to poison ivy, snakes, chiggers, ticks, spiders, drownings and even to good old Sol himself. Most of all, don't forget the highway perils that are always prevalent during the summer months when all those crazy vacationers and tourists are out and about, free from work and taking part in their intermission - resting?
