Director to Stav Another Year; Beret Approved as Uniform Item Two birthday presents were WASHINGTON (AFNS) received by the Women in the Air Force on their 21st birthday, June 12. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. McConnell nounced that WAF Director Col. Jeanne M. Holm would an- continue in that position for an additional year and that the for the past beret, field-teste- d six months, had been approved as a uniform item. Colonel Holm's tour was extended to November 1970. The native of Portland, Ore., is the sixth to serve .as WAF director. She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in July, 1942, and was commissioned the following year. Since assuming office in 1965, Colonel Holm has been instrumental in bringing about many changes in revitalizing the Air Force program for women. Through her efforts, many specialties formerly closed to enlisted women were opened. She has initiated a threefold expansion of WAF strength over the next few years and a wider range of assignment location, particularly in overseas locations. Approval of the beret, too, is directly attributed to Colonel Holm who has campaigned for "more feminine" appeal in WAF uniforms. A new lightweight uniform won approval last year. The dark blue felt beret has been test-wor- n by 100 officers and airmen throughout the world for the six months. Acceptance was overwhelming. "The beret is popular because it is a classic hat," said Colonel Holm. "It has long been worn by civilian women throughout the world and by military women in Europe. "This particular beret was designed by Mr. Harry Gilbert to complement the women's new blue service uniform, which he had also designed. We've found in testing, however, that the hat is very becoming not only to the blue service but to all the women's uniforms, including the flight n, suit," Colonel Holm added. Unlike men's soft berets, the Attention! All Military Personnel a women's hat is blocked into a shape, with a "crush" effect on the right side. Miniature officer or enlisted hat insignia is placed toward the left side of the beret. The beret is expected to be permanent available for commercial purchase in a few months. To help introduce the new hat into the issue system, it is planned to substitute a beret for one of two flight caps issued to basic trainees as soon as production permits. Eventually, the beret will replace the flight cap. yprniroifni miiiii-tnii has now adopted a military Sales Dept. WHAT MONEY can't buy what it bought last week.
