According to a museum brochure, "The Museum of Art is a place where the heart and mind are brought together to seek knowledge and values, self affirmation and spiritual understanding." The museum muse-um is meant to be a place of reflection and inquiry. A variety of art exhibits will nurture reflection and inquiry and will appeal to a variety of artistic tastes. The three-dimensional nature of sculpture is often of greatest interest to the younger set. "Mahonri: A Song of Joys" will be on exhibit through Nov. 18. Many of Mahonri Young's sculptures sculp-tures portray people engaged in common activites. Young captures the movement and strength of the people he sculpted. Viewing these sculptures sculp-tures with your family can be not only a fun activity, but a springboard to discussion. dis-cussion. Another remarkable exhibit of three-dimensional items which will appeal to families is "Untamed Spirits: Animal Imagery in Native American Art." A variety of animal and nature images have been incorporated into their creations. cre-ations. Of course an art museum muse-um generally contains paintings. The Museum of Art is certainly no exception. excep-tion. A permanent collection, collec-tion, "150 Years of American Painting: 1794-1944," 1794-1944," includes many beautiful beau-tiful works. Viewing a large number of paintings can be draining drain-ing on some children. It can help a young viewer to focus on just one painting. Sit on one of the many comfortable com-fortable benches in the gallery and talk about the painting. Starting simple, you can discuss what you see in the picture.
