Show Pleasant Grove Review New Utah! - Wednesday, November 1 , 2000 - Page 1 0 :4 Sports wk JEi By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove football foot-ball season came to an abrupt halt this past weekend week-end when the Olympus Titans gained revenge for their loss to the Vikings last season with a 14 - 7 win over the favored Vikings. Though a last minute drive to tie the game failed when Olympus intercepted a Viking pass at the goal line, Pleasant Grove could lay total blame on two failed drives in the first half that both ended inside the Titans' four' yard line. Things looked good early for the Vikings when Bridger Anderson jumped on an Olympus fumble during dur-ing the Titan first drive of the night. Though the Viking drive failed to produce pro-duce points, the Pleasant Grove defense appeared ready for the Olympus option attack. When the Viking defense held the Titans to a punt on the next drive, momentum appeared to be squarely on the Pleasant Grove sideline. That momentum took a disastrous dis-astrous turn when the Olympus punt hit a Viking player, resulting in a fumble that the Titans recovered at the PG 31 yard line. Olympus capitalized on the Viking turnover by mounting a 31 yard, minute and a half drive that gave the Titans a 7 - 0 lead as the first quarter came to a close. Though the turn-over had dug an early hole for Pleasant Grove, the team p-VtiWv r-11rVWiim.lni.iniln.i...n i....ninni, -r, , , .-.. .-, rebounded quickly with a nice drive. As .the second quarter began, the Vikings had already moved to the Titan 45 yard line. Cory Fralick then connected with Anderson for a 21 yard gain to the Olympus 10 yard line. After moving to the goal line, Pleasant Grove coughed up their second turnover of the night when Olympus dropped on a Viking fumble that killed the first solid opportunity to score. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Pleasant Grove senior Jeremy Morse came up with a big fumble recovery that ended an Olympus scoring drive. With those four minutes, min-utes, Pleasant Grove began driving towards the Titan goal line. Fralick came up with another impressive pass, this time a 29 yard toss to Anderson that set the Viking offense in motion at the Titan eight yard line. When three straight attempts to score failed, Pleasant Grove elected to set up a 22 yard field goal attempt. But instead of kicking the field goal, a fake kick was planned. A failed double pass again resulted in no points as the Olympus defense rose to the occasion. In the second half neither nei-ther team could convert on their first offensive series. With three minutes remaining remain-ing in the third quarter, Coach Bill Mikelson called for a fake punt at the Titan 45 yard line. The fake caught the Titans off guard and the Pleasant Grove drive continued with a first down at the Olympus 40 yard line. Fralick continued his impressive passing night by completing a 23 yard pass to Kory Drew. Another Fralick to Drew connection set up the Vikings' lone touchdown at the one yard line. Drew completed the drive by diving into the end zone for the one yard touchdown touch-down run. Ty Lewis added the extra point kick despite separating separat-ing his shoulder while blocking on the touchdown run. When Pleasant Grove took possession of the football foot-ball early in the fourth quarter, the Vikings were already facing the rest of the game without the services serv-ices of 50 percent of their backfield because of the Lewis injury. But when Drew also went down with a hyper-extended elbow, the game appeared in jeopardy. But both Lewis and Drew battled their way back into the game to help the Pleasant Grove defense force an Olympus punt with four minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for the Vikings, Olympus was able to punt the ball to the Pleasant Grove two yard line. Hoping to avoid a safety, the Vikings played the series very conservatively by running three straight ;. . nr. The Titans had no intention inten-tion of driving 50 yards or more for the winning score, they planned to block the Pleasant Grove punt and score quickly, and that is exactly what happened. The Viking punt was blocked and only reached the two yard line before going out on the Titan sideline. side-line. One play later Olympus scored the winning win-ning touchdown with three minutes left on the clock. On the final drive of the night, Pleasant Grove showed unbelievable heart and determination. Led by Drew, who could barely move his right arm, the Vikings marched towards the Titan goal line. Drew converted a key fourth down play by reaching high above his head for a pass. A pass interference penalty preserved the drive with 48 seconds remaining in the game. But after driving to the 16 yard line, the season came to a sad end when a Titan defender stepped in front of Bridger Anderson mcnes away irom the end zone. ; ,-i'iat' Though this team did not ! obtain their highest goal, they showed leadership' determination and heart pGHS that will propel this group ; jeniii of student athletes to much ' Hit higher lifelong goals.
