When American Fork took a 6-0 lead over us in the first inning, we had to wake up. American Fork hit the ball well. That's what hurt us. "They hit the ball into the holes. That put heat on our team. We overlooked American Fork, concerning ourselves more with Springville. We were unwise to overlook American Fork. They taught us a lesson." The game opened with pitcher pitch-er Jenny Scoville walking Autumn Carter. Julie Paxman tripled Carter in to unleash the six-run rally, fueled by four singles. sin-gles. Only when Scoville retired Tawni Fagan for the third American Fork out did the rally Cease. v In the bottom of the second. pitcher Deb Dunlop walked Jenni Thurston, but third baseman base-man Melissa Gleason grounded out the next three batters to protect the 6-0 lead. American Fork increased it to 7-0 on a Gleason single in the second, and Pleasant Grove soon found itself in danger of another Caveman rally. Scoville struck out Tami Adamson to avert a repeat of the first inning. After Pleasant Grove loaded the bases on two outs in the bottom of the inning, Thurston singled in two runs on a fly ball into center, but American Fork forced Whitnie Winger out at third to end the inning. The next inning, Carter hit a two-out double off Scoville, but third baseman C.C. Francom grounded out Paxman to keep American Fork from profitting from the two-bagger. Doubling in the bottom of the inning, Becky Gwilliam scored on an error. That was the only run Pleasant Grove was permitted to make in the third. The next inning, Gleason singled into right, but got picked off at third for a third out, keeping her team from posting runs. Winger's fourth-inning, one-run one-run single unleashed a six-run scoring spree that put the Vikings ahead 9-7. Pleasant Grove's lead didn't last long. In the fifth, Paxman singled in a run, then scored on a Gleason single to tie the game at nine. They added one more run before the side was retired. Getting on base through an error in the bottom of the inning, Ambert Hilton stole home to tie the game at 10. "A Cami Morrill one-run single put Pleasant Grove back ahead 11-10 the next inning. Capitalizing on a Viking error, Paxman scored a tying run in the seventh. The Vikings came close to avoiding an extra inning when they loaded the bases on two outs in the bottom of the seventh, sev-enth, but left fielder Paxman's interception of a Rachel Hartgrove fly ball forced an eighth inning. In the top of it, Dunlop scored a go-ahead run on an error. In the bottom of the inning, though, Scoville bunted in a run, then advanced to third on a Francom single. Scoville tore home for the winning run. When the Red Devils came to town May 3, their pitcher, Robyn Jensen, struck out 11 Viking hitters. Jensen's hitting performance didn't stop Katie Sapp from hitting a triple off her during the afternoon. Pleasant Grove did enjoy a 1-0 1-0 lead in the first two innings. Springville pulled ahead 2-1 in the third inning, then tacked on three runs in the sixth to conclude con-clude the game's scoring. In the Provo game, pitcher Chelsea Sondrop held the Bulldogs to one hit and went 2-3 2-3 at the plate. Pleasant Grove took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and scored another four runs in the fourth. Provo scored both of its runs in the fifth. KSaSsSSi?SSS! if iii!!;:!':-;::;. t 5 t M: ii . ' ' I LL, v-..sy " - ... On May 2, the Vikings blanked Payson 5-0 and then followed that up with a 2-0 shutout of Spanish Fork on Thursday to end the regular season. In Tuesday's game, Brian Kennington scored two goals to help the Vikings cruise past Payson 5-0. Zach Shore, Mark Thurgood and Chris Harvey also had tallies for Pleasant Grove in the victory. The shutout against Spanish Fork on Thursday did not come FT- . .y ' IK PG and Spanish Fork players vie for the ball Thursday. very easily for the Vikings. In the first half, Pleasant Grove had many shots on goal, but the Spanish Fork keeper, Ryan Warner, continued to come up with stop after stop. One of the save attempts Warner had in the first half actually resulted in a goal for Pleasant Grove. Warner made a diving stop, but Viking Dave-Donaldson Dave-Donaldson came up and kicked the ball right through Warner's arms for the only goal of the first half. The second half belonged to Viking goalie Ryan DeGraff. He was faced with many shots, but like Warner in the first half, DeGraff came up with save after save when the ball came his way. It also didn't help Spanish Fork much when many of their free kicks directed at the goal ended up wide. Pleasant Grove earned an insurance goal in the second half by Zach Shore to give them the 2-0 victory. The win also marked the third straight shutout for DeGraff and his fourth of the season. Pleasant Grove coach Billy Lynch knows what's needed with the playoffs around the corner. "We have a lot of work to do. It is back to the gravel pit on Monday. We can play better than we did today (referring to the Spanish Fork game). You have to give Spanish Fork a lot of credit; they did not let us do a whole lot of stuff. They played well," Lynch said. "I am proud of the boys, they kept coming back after a disastrous disas-trous start of the season. Now we have to step it up for State," Lynch said.
