Show Times Ne Page A6 Thursday,Aprl 17, 2003 WsPapt: ft 4 Playing basketball independently inde-pendently isn't an option for 13-year-old Zach Swenson. There's no place for him to go without his parents. Zach, who has Down syndrome, is like many other children with disabilities dis-abilities in the Orem community com-munity and those surrounding. sur-rounding. There is no facility facil-ity with a gym, proper supervision and the medical med-ical assistance these children chil-dren need, said Kimber Dower, a local occupational therapist. "They need their own specialized multi-purpose center, where the parents can safely leave them for a short time," she said. "This gives the children independence, inde-pendence, and it gives the parents a break." A charity auction will be held Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in the Utah Valley State College ballroom ball-room to raise funds for the building. "It takes a well-designed well-designed building and program pro-gram to do this," Dower said. "We have the program pro-gram called 'Friday's Kids Respite,' which includes a Registered Nurse. Respite means 'relief,' and through Roving. Under Timpanogos Green Y l 1 Kelsey's Easter Bunny Zach Swenson at Friday's Kids Respite the good hearts of people, we can achieve this building build-ing that will not only provide pro-vide high-quality social interaction for the children chil-dren but also a break for these dedicated parents." Friday's Kids Respite, a non-profit organization started by Dower, parents and others, provides "A Night Out" on Friday nights for the parents at Kids on the Move, a local early-intervention center in Orem. The program utilizes uti-lizes volunteers, who must be age 16 and up. "We're serving 19 families fami-lies currently, and the demand is increasing as people hear about us," Dower said. "There are so many children with disabilities dis-abilities that hardly get out without their parents. We want to provide a place for them where they are completely accepted, loved and have a chance to socially interact with others oth-ers besides their parents." The joy of Easter time arose, As Timpanogos gleams and glows. It was the children's special day, When they could sing and they could pray. And Nature sounds a chorus Of every living thing; And Jesus stops to listen, When cheerful children sing! "An Easter bunny!" Kelsey cried. She raced to hold it in her arms. Her smile shone wide from side to side, As Kelsey beamed, at bunny's charms. He had a little bunny nose, With whiskers, sprouting from the tip; And from his head, antennas rose, Like ears en route to take a trip. As Kelsey gazed into his eyes, She saw herself in two pink pools, As Easter Bunny said, "Surprise!" Which, surely, was against the rules. For Easter bunnies cannot speak To children, many people say; But Kelsey's bunny was unique On that amazing Easter day. "Surprise!" he spoke.
