Show American Fork CitizenLone Downtown trees get facelift i By Cathy Allred The trees on American Fork's Main Street are getting get-ting a facelift. Steve Calton and his staff are pruning the trees . to beautify the business district. dis-trict. Hired by the city through the beautification committee, Calton Tree Service began two years ago to trim American Fork's aging trees. "For years, the trees were trimmed in an improper manner," council member Juel Belmont said. "Now the trees will be trimmed properly and the Main Street trees will grow up beyond the business signs." Downtown American Fork Inc. acting chair Judy Price was with Belmont to witness the tree pruning. She is equally excited about the new way in which the trees will be taken care of. She would like to see the trees become an inviting canopy for shoppers and other pedestrians. "Many of the Main Street trees are 25 years old, just one or two years younger than the Provo trees," Belmont said. "Those trees are 50 feet tall." But many of the American Fork trees are stunted and sparse being at the most 10 feet tall, having been lopped off each year to keep the growth under the overhanging overhang-ing power lines. Calton and his crew will allow the old trees to grow up beyond the lines and giving the trees the capability to provide shade for pedestrians. "What this does is it reduces heat, increases oxygen, oxy-gen, and helps reduce global warming," Price said. "If each city in the world would do this, it would make for a more sustainable environment."
