Fork, Tracksters win both region titles with drama By David Dean Sports Correspondent The last two races of the 1999 Region VI track meet at Provo High School didn't go the way that Lone Peak had planned. In fact, the girl's and boy's 4 X 400 meter relay teams thought they had lost the region titles. , The girls were in a tight race for the championship with who else but Spanish Fork. The boys were in the fight of their life with Provo for the title. Lone Peak's team was wounded and worn. In the girl's race, Misty Jorgensen took the baton on the final handoff 20 meters behind Spanish Fork. With every ounce of energy she could muster and with each painful breath, she fought and struggled strug-gled her way around that seemingly seem-ingly endless track, but she wouldn't give in to the pam and torment. Misty is a beautiful runner, probably one of the most graceful grace-ful in the state, but on this day at this time; her legs wouldn't let her, overtake the Spanish Fork girl. As Misty crossed the finsih line, in second place, she collapsed to her knees in total exhaustion. She started to cry thinking they had just lost the region title to Spanish Fork. The boys were next. Their team was made up of runners who had already run in two prior events. Their goal, a simple sim-ple one, was to finish ahead of Provo. Adam Gauger ran the first lap; he trailed the field for most of the lap but then shifted into overdrive at the 300 meter mark and passed all but one before he gave the baton to Chris McConnell. Now Chris is a captain of this team. In one of the most gutsy performances I've ever witnessed in this sport in my lifetime, I saw this young man find it within himself to run and not be weary. He gave Lone Peak the lead after two laps. The baton was passed to Jared Danis, another great runner. run-ner. The only problem was that Jared was running injured, having sprained a knee the day before. It didn't matter, however; howev-er; he took the baton and with his determination kept them in second place, as aTimpview runner passed him in the final 100 meters. Now it was up to Adam Chase. Jared gave him the baton and he was off in a fllash. This was Adam's third 400 of the day, and to his team; the most important. He main-; tained second place for 300 meters before Brian Glazier of American Fork caught him. Now he was in third place, but still ahead of Provo. He was sprinting for all he was worth. The last 100 meters was a neverending path. Provo caught him at the 370 meter mark and edged him at the finish fin-ish line. The last 30 meters I saw him search for more energy and gasp for more oxygen. When he crossed the finish line you could see the torment within him. The team thought Provo had just taken the title from them. Now came the announcements. announce-ments. Lone Peak girls - first place in Region VI . Provo boys - first place in Region VI. A bittersweet bit-tersweet moment for the Knights. Since the track meet was at Provo, their boy's team took the trophy for a victory lap around their track. The trophy aw- H Vipm4nii )". M a -"!
