Show BROWSING -With Tom The echo of Christmas Carols Car-ols has faded into the past. Ornaments and decorations have been removed from the Christmas tree and that bit of finery that once graced the woodland has been relegated to the garbage dump. We have looked at the gifts we received, some with satisfaction, satis-faction, and others with wonder, wond-er, and once again as in years past we say "next year we must cut down." For the second year I received a beautiful gift. It was in the form of a letter containing a check for twenty-five twenty-five dollars. It came from a couple in our town. They wanted want-ed the money spent on the children of a needy family, and their names to be kept anonymous. Bless these thoughtful people, they had the true spirit of Christmas in their hearts and they shared it with me. So, another year has passed and we have little more left than our memories. Soon we will possess a new year with new hopes and dreams. We have a new President with a flashing smile who has promised us many things. If he can remove the doubts from our minds he will be a great President. I think back to my boyhood days in Wales and my memory is stirred once again with the remembrance of a little spinster spin-ster woman who was our next door neighbor. She was one of those quiet, unassuming people peo-ple who made no ripple in the waters of life, yet she was one of those individuals who it was good to be around. Gladys Shellabeer had one strange belief. Where it originated, origin-ated, goodness only knows, perhaps it came from a heart full of longing. But she believed that if she first saw a man child on New Years morning the year would be good for her. My mother learned of her strange belief and made sure it came to pass. So on the morning of New Year's day, even before the sun had come up over the Welsh hills, she would see that I was dressed up in my Sunday clothes and instructed me to call upon dear Gladys. I would rap soundly on her door with the brass knocker, t men wan paiieimy iui iici iu answer.' With her knitted - L -i i i i .1 i -i- shawl over her shoulders she would open the door. "Good morning, Mrs. Shellabeer," Shel-labeer," I would say. "I have come to wish you a Happy New Year." Her eyes would light up and twinkle like the evening star. She would put her arm around my shoulder and lead me into her sitting room. While I sat she rummaged through several drawers and then presented me with an assortment of gifts. An orange, or-ange, a small bunch of big black grapes, and a sixpence she could ill afford to give. Like the sing says, "Oh memories that bless and burn." My little subterfuge made a woman happy on New Year's Day, and in my memory I can still taste those grapes. On my way home I popped one into my mouth and let it roll around. When I broke it with my teeth the juice would "FIVE for a DOLLAR" DAYS EVERY SUn. thru WED. Ah. dear Mrs. Shellabeer, spinster, spin-ster, never knew the love of a man, but in the heart of a boy you were something special. Well, it's time to think about resolutions. I look about me and see that the grim reaper has taken his toll of some of my friends and acquaintances. So, I am only going to make one New Years resolution. "To live one day at a time and let tomorrow take care of itself. To find serenity of spirit in the things I enjoy. People, the house I live in, and my good neighbors. To catch a fish in some lake, and to see the first smile of my latest grandson, and to give thanks for his life. To hold the hand of my wife like we did in years gone by, and to be grateful there was no such thing as abortion in the lives of our parents." So, ring in the New Year. We know you will bring us problems, prob-lems, but we can overcome them, and by so doing we will enrich our lives.
