Show ifes For letter Liuins BY Dr. Ford McBride Can you count on one hand the number of New Year's resolutions you have kept? A friend told me his reason for making New Year's resolutions resolu-tions is to have the fun of breaking them. Sound familiar? fami-liar? There are many reasons why we make New Year's resolutions. The newness of the year encourages change. Also thinking about self-improvement self-improvement gives us a good feeling. During the holiday season all of us have good intentions about making changes. Unfortunately, we want and expect change to come without exercising self control. In other words, if the task is easy we'll try it. Why aren't resolutions kept? Often resolutions are made Allen T. (Tom) Nelson Petty Officer 2nd Class Allen T. Nelson, commonly known by family member and friends as Tom, has received his honorable hon-orable discharge from the U.S. Navy having served for the past six years active duty. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce R. Nelson of American Fork. Petty Officer Nelson served duty on two shops during his enlistment, the USS Purham and the USS Peoria. While on board the Peoria, his ship was involved in Operation Eagle Pull, which involved the evacuation eva-cuation of American citizens for Cambodia. Shortly thereafter ther-eafter followed the evacuation of American citizens from Viet Nam. They also evacuated many thousands of Vietnamese Vietna-mese refugees. Prior to his enlistment, Petty Pet-ty Officer Nelson served an LDS mission in Uruguay and attended Brigham Young University Uni-versity for three semesters. Reserach has shown that the primary reason people don't follow through is that their goals lack a workable plan of action. Constructive change can't be accomplished without a plan. Many of us spend more time planning what we are going to eat for breakfast than how we're going to reach a particular goal. How true the old saying is, "When we fail to plan, we plan to fail." Goal setting must be an active ac-tive process. Some general suggestions for developing a plan are: First, don't build failure in by setting unrealistic goals. Know your limitations and strengths. Second, break goals down into smaller sub-goals sub-goals that can be accomplished accom-plished within a specified per- Home From Navy education at the University of Utah. Third, develop ways to reward yourself when goals are accomplished. ac-complished. 1 knew of a person who had her hair done every time she was able to reach a particularly important goal. Fourth, work on a daily basis. Take one day at a time. Thinking Think-ing of what things are going to be like months away can be discouraging. Fifth, let your wife, husband, or friends know what goals you've set. This is an effective practice because other people not only remind us of the goals but they can also be a valuable source of encouragement and support. There have been thousands of words written about how to keep New Year's resolutions. After all is said and done, however, the most important aspect of change is honest commitment to that change. Garn Praises Air Locating System The U.S. Air Force's decision deci-sion to locate the logistics management system for the new F16 aircraft at Utah's Hill Air Force Base recently drew the praise of Senator Jake Garn (R-Ut). Garn, who, with other members of the Utah Congressional delegation, encouraged en-couraged the Air Force to put the management function at Hill, said the final choice for the assignment was made between Hill and McClellan Air Force Base, California. "The F-16 assignment will have no immediate significant impact on employment at Hill," said Senator Garn, "but the action could mean as many as 1,200 civilian jobs in the next decade. The base recently suffered a personnel reduction and I'm certain this news will be especially welcomed wel-comed in northern Utah." Garn said production of a total of 1,000 F-16's is expected to begin in 1979.
