Show AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN THURSDAY, MAY 6, 1976 ren bar SI Hundreds of Cub Scouts, scouts and school children have gained a better understanding of the importance of the American Ameri-can flag as a result of the sewing skill and patriotism of an American Fork woman. It all began about 10 years ago when Ruth D. Mott was working on a committee to plan an American Heritage program for the Cub Scouts of the Alpine Scouting District. She found she had some left over material from making Cub Scout neckerchiefs and decided to use it in developing the theme of the history of the flag. Using her sewing know how, she fashioned 3x5 foot replicas of the national colors through the Queen Anne flag, the flag of England which flew over the original 13 American colonies down to the 24 star '49'er flag. In her display, she completed a colorful Grand Union flag which retained the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew found in the Queen Anne flag. The red field was broken by six white stripes to represent the 13 colonies. Next came the Revolutionary fine with thp rrino t the motto "Appeal to Heaven." This was followed by the yellow flag with coiled snake which bears the words "Don't Tread on Me." The historic Old Glory with its 13 stripes and blue field with 13 circled stars, representing a new constellation, was next. Old Glroy was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, June 14, 1777, and was the first official offi-cial flag of the new nation. Also in the collection is the 76 flag . . . with its special significance today in the bientennial observance. A duplicate of the Star Spangled Span-gled Banner that waved over Ft. McHenry when it was bombarded bom-barded in September, 1814, and inspired Francis Scott Key to write what is iiow the national anthem, is also included. This flag had 15 stars and 15 stripes since two colonies had been added to the union and a star and stripe was added to the flag for each. As more states joined the Union, it was decided that the flag would get to be an awkward awk-ward shape if more and more stripes were added for each state, and on April 4, 1818, Congress passed a law restoring restor-ing the design to the original 13 stripes and providing the addition addi-tion of a star to the blue field for each new state. Concluding flags in Mrs. Mott's collection are the 1818 flag, and the 49er, with 24 stars and 13 stripes. Over the years since Mrs. Mott first made them, the flags have appeared as teaching aids for Cub Scout and scout groups, at school programs in not only American Fork, but also schools in nearby Utah County and Salt Lake communities, and have been used for flag ceremonies on civic occasions. Operators With Mom More than 11 million sons and daughters will be giving Mom a ring on Sunday, May 9, according accord-ing to local exchange manager Mike W. Andrews. Because Mother's Day is the i v ' Kl rM. MYr i FLAGS - Mrs. Ruth D. Mott tells Chris Roberts about early day flags. to Help 's Calls second busiest day of the year for the telephone company, Mountain Bell has scheduled nearly 500 operators in Utah to handle the high volume of long distance calls that will be made on that special day. And because of the heavy telephone traffic, Mr. Andrews suggests a few tips on avoiding delays and saving time and money for those who desire to wish mother well on her day. Timing will help the call go through. To avoid the busiest time of the day, calls should be placed between noon and 5 p.m. Calls will also go through faster if they are placed at times other than on the hour or half hour when calling peaks are the highest. You may even wish to call on Saturday and tell your mom you couldn't wait. Plan in advance what you want to say. Callers will be able to cover more conversation conversa-tion less time by jotting down things they want to talk about. Those interesting little tidbits are also less likely to be forgotten. forgot-ten. Direct dialing saves time and money. It always costs less to call direct because an operator's opera-tor's assistance isn't required. In most cases, direct dialing is also the fastest way to complete com-plete a call. If you don't know the number, numb-er, it's best to get it from the long distance operator before Mother's Day. If Mom lives outside the U.S., it's especially important to have her number ahead of time. The trouble with socialism is that when people lean on one another they soon get too weak to stand alone. Too many of our prejudices are like pyramids upside down. They rest on tiny, trivial incidents, inci-dents, but they spread upward and outward until they fill our minds.
