Show Utah Firemen to Gather For Seminar in Salt Lake When it comes to giving, AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN THURSDAY. APRIL 15, 1976 some people stop at nothing. ToP ii n n i hi Ciii n isss on Balloting in the Highland District Dis-trict Planning Commission election Tuesday elected three Highland men to the newly formed board. John Gunter, Kent Day, and Russell Black were the top three candidates among the eight men who had been nominated to sit on the commission. The voting went as follows: John Gunter 108 Kent Day 106 Russell Black 90 Rick Westwood 79 Don Fenn 69 Charles Lebarron 58 Dick Reisner 47 Don Lebarron 46 Three write-in votes were cast for a total of 202 ballots cast in the election. Each of the three winners provided a statement of their feelings about the issues facing Highland. The following statements state-ments as well as those of the other candidates, were provided provid-ed for the Highland voters. John Gunter Most of you have heard me quote Pogo: "It's funny how all the people fussin' about birth-control birth-control wait to do their fussin' until after they're born!" In the same light, I'm convinced that Highland (and all of Utah) is going to grow - we couldn't and shouldn't stop it! Such growth will occur with or without with-out our involvement, but I'm also convinced that we can do some planning an provide some direction which will benefit all Highlanders, present and future. Some residents want to subdivide sub-divide for their sons and daughters - and that's great. Some residents and nonresidents non-residents want to develop their land for financial gain - and that's all right, too. Some residents resi-dents (like me) would just like to plan for imminent growth so that we can maintain the "gentleman farmer" environment. environ-ment. Well, we can satisfy all parties without moving all the way to incorporation as a city! We can plan for growth! We can take advantage of develop-metn develop-metn procedures which provide for the establishment of park area m subdivisions? We' can try to get some winding streets instead of ending up with a checkerboard in Highland. We could even try to establish some bridal paths, a central stable area, etc. "But we should plan now while Highland is relatively open!" Kent Day I have enjoyed those who have moved into the Highland area and realize there will be many more fine people who will move in. I do not like the idea of me telling someone what he must do with his property nor do I like the idea of someone telling SUNNY NEW SWIMWEAR 10.99 to 16.99 Wherever you spend your summer, you'll need at least one of our marvelous new swim fashions. I realize there must be a certain amount of regulation of property proper-ty and any community affairs, but prefer to keep these regulations regula-tions to a minimum. I prefer to encourage the use of the land in Highland area by those who want at least some land to go with their home such as one (1) acre or larger, and believe there are many who prefer to live in such an area. I prefer we avoid participating participat-ing in a sewer project as it must encourage the commercial commer-cial and dense type building which I don't want to live in the middle of. I oppose incorporation incorpora-tion on the same basis. I do realize it would be best to make any sewer truck line passing through the area large enough to provide for any future necessity neces-sity if it develops. I like farm life, the inconveniences inconven-iences which go with it, and the advantages which also go with it. Let's keep Highland as rural as possible. Russell Black It is my feeling that self-determination self-determination is an important thing and that government in controlling the lives of people should be as close to the people as it is possible to put it. However, timing is extremely important in these matters and moves must be made in an unhurried fashion and with a complete study to determine what the taxing impact will be. With government raising taxes at every turn, we as Highlanders Highland-ers should not be in a hurry to impose an additional burden on ourselves. It is also important that the property owners of Highland be protected, that they might preserve the value of their property, that their life work Cartwright Specials '1973 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2 dr. hardtop, Vinyl roof, full powered inch Air Cond., Extra Ex-tra Sharp, Real Special ' $2995 1976 Pinto Stallion 2 dr. hatchback, hatch-back, 4 cyl., auto., less than 5,000 miles, like new $3695 1971 Plymouth Fury III, 4 dr. sedan, full powered inch Air Cond., extra clean, special at $1495 "Deal right with Cartwright" Marvin's Motor Piaza 151 East Main American Fork Phone 756-2880 might not be placed in jeopardy, jeo-pardy, and that they might sell if and when the need arises and enjoy the comforts to which they're entitled.
