A request by the Mountain States Telephone Co. for a review re-view of its earnings in Utah with an explanation of the need for improvement in revenues was filed recently with the Public Service Commission. The application was presented by Eric C. Aaberg, Telephone Company Vice President and General Manager. It stressed a need for additional revenue if the company is to continue providing progressive telephone service serv-ice required and expected by the people of Utah. Aaberg said telephone rates were last raised in 1958. Since early 1962, telephone rates in Utah have been reduced by$l,- 70,000. This included a 25 cent per month decrease in residential residen-tial rates, lower charges for long distance calls within the state and removal of interzone charges char-ges within metropolitan Salt Lake. In addition there has been a complete elimination of some toll charges by expanding local calling areas. The application asks the Commission Com-mission to consider the value of the company's property in the state and establish a fair rate of return to be applied to that valuation. val-uation. Since the last general rate increase in-crease ten years ago, Aaberg said 0 B 1 111,1 r 1 I' i 'oij E I'M NOT MUCH ON MATH, BUT EVIDENCE IS MOUNTING ...I'D BETTER BRUSH UP ON CALORIE COUNTING! the company has improved and expanded telephone service at increasingly higher costs. It has also experienced increased costs in acquiring new capital for expansion ex-pansion of telephone facilities and substantial increases in wage costs and taxes. The application noted: "'The present schedule of rates and charges for interstate telephone services now produces earnings which are inadequate to sustain continued service expansion and improvement and to provide a fair and reasonable return." Increases in taxes from $6.0 million in 1958 to $12.9 million mil-lion in 1967 were cited. There were 288,000 telephones in Utah at the beginning of lQ58and478,-000 lQ58and478,-000 at the beginning of this year. However, the investment per telephone in Utah has climbed from $298 to $437. Annual wage payments have increased nearly $8 million since 1958. Construction expenditures of I the company in the state during i the past ten years were $168 ; million, ranging between $13 mil-! mil-! lion and $21 million per year. I Aaberg said the extent of future j construction and improvement of i facilities depends on the firm's ability to acquire new capital. ! Complete conversion of local telephone offices to dial and other Witnesses Slate Convention At Billings, Mont. Members of the AmericanFork congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses Wit-nesses are making arrangements to attend a four-day district con-vention con-vention in Billings, Montana, starting July 11. Orville Wel-den, Wel-den, local presiding minister, stated that this convention will be one of 39 similar gatherings to be held throughout the United States this summer. Mr. Welden said, "Since the assembly theme will be 'Good News for All Nations,' we anticipate an-ticipate something new and startling start-ling that will greatly affect the preaching work of Jehovah's Witnesses Wit-nesses for the next several years.'' More and more, Jehovah's Je-hovah's Witnesses areemphasiz- ing the urgency uf the times and the nearness of the establishment of God's Kingdom rule over the entire earth. Continued Mr. Welden, 'In these times of global stress, it ill be refreshing to draw spiritual spir-itual strength from the Bible in association with those who recognize recog-nize God's Word as a safe guide and sure hope for the future. 'We always reap rich spiritual spiri-tual benefits from conventions like these, which are a regular feature of our worship, and this year should be no exception," he said. This series of district conventions, conven-tions, which is sponsored by the Watchtower Society, will feature over twenty hours of Bible talks and stage dramatizations. Delegates Del-egates are expected from Montana, Mon-tana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. modernization gains were given as reasons the company has been able to continue to keep pace with the growth and communi- i cation requirements of the area ! during the past ten years without increasing rates. ; It was pointed out there has : been a leveling off of the oppor- I tunities for increased economies to be brought about by such im- j provements. ; The company requested the j Commission to schedule a hear- j ing to consider a fair and rea- sonable return on investment in I the present economy.
