The open house and showcase show-case night will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The evening's opening events will begin in the auditorium at 6:30 and go to 7 p.m.. THS groups the orchestra, Show & Chamber Choir, and cheerleaders cheer-leaders will perform. The PTSA will also demonstrate the use of PowerSchool to monitor student achievement. A DVD that was filmed last summer will be used to demonstrate dem-onstrate how the student-led conferences will be conducted. t wolves Bri Borup Homecoming royalty is a little different this year at Timpanogos. Since there is no showcase, the Homecoming royalty is mostly based on popular vote. I know that most schools do it that way, but I for one, truly miss the great tradition we had of showcasing Timp's best. I was one of the few (and the proud) who attended every FnriTnrfflwniiiiiliffrmirnTriimn i 11 iiiiiiniminii iniiiMimiiiii MimiwifBWiWiramawM 7 days. 4 lines and a photo. Zirbes said the stu-dentbody stu-dentbody president and his mother are featured in the DVD, and show how a student presents a portfolio of his or her work to parents. After the general session Wednesday, parents and students stu-dents will go to the A2 homeroom home-room class, where teachers will answer questions about the student-led process, show sample portfolios, and discuss scheduling. The conferences will be held twice this year on Nov. 14 and Feb. 20. Zirbes said the student -led conferences hope to accomplish accom-plish three goals: to celebrate and promote learning; to increase the students' communication commu-nication skills: and to promote lifelong learning. Zirbes said students are involved collecting materials, Timpanogos showcase. One, because my friends were up on stage, and two, because it is a free amazingly entertaining show. The showcase actually did change the outcome of the winners. Without it we are left with a huge popularity contest. Luckily, Luck-ily, a popularity contest will give us great results, because Timpanogos students will only vote for the nicest, most well rounded kids. If you've never heard about a showcase until now, and you think you've missed out on your chance to see one don't worry. Timpanogos still has two other awesome showcases The Mr. and Mrs. T showcase show-case it possibly the highlight of A "s MEGAPLB presenting what they have done, making improvement goals for each class, and undergoing under-going self-assessment, and the educational studies administrators administra-tors have looked at show that students do better academically academi-cally with the program. "The celebration of learning takes the students wherever they are in their continuum," Zirbes said. "Each student should be able to find something some-thing to celebrate in their learning, learn-ing, and something to improve on ... A Parentteacherstudent survey will be done after the first (conference). We want to improve as much as possible. It's obviously a process." At Wednesday's open house, parents and students will also be able to visit other classrooms and teachers. The media center will be open for additional PowerSchool train my year. Last year, as you entered into the auditorium you walked on the red carpet, with paparazzi pa-parazzi taking pictures as you walked in. There were also celebrity guest hosts (yes, Timpanogos' very own version of Jessica Simpson was there). The live show is hilarious. (Best moment ever was when the word "Colonel Sanders" Sand-ers" was misread as "Colonial Sanders".) That great show is still here this year. Prom showcase is the other amazing show. Last year, I was lucky enough to be a part of it. The contestants spend an hour everyday after school learning a dance, making mov- heraldextra.com DaUl&Hcratd ing. The counseling center will offer information on course offerings, testing, careers, NCAA eligibility and scholarships. scholar-ships. The evening will conclude con-clude with a punch and cookies celebration in the commons area from 8:15 to 8:30. At 8:30, THS athletes and their parents are invited to return to the auditorium au-ditorium for a presentation on NCAA eligibility requirements and other issues. "We hope that all students and parents will come and enjoy en-joy this important evening with us," said Zirbes. "Some people may ask, 'Why can't my student stu-dent do that at home with me?' We want it done in the sch(xl setting, where parents can visit classrooms and see what's happening hap-pening ... If parents can't come, we will encourage students to take the materials home and go over them." ies, answering questions, and then spend their lunchtime playing games. The showcase itself puts all the elements together for an incredibly awesome show. The theme was "Back to the Future" Fu-ture" in between each skit we would act a scene connecting them to each other. One couple was assigned the '20s, and did a lovely number to "Singing in the Rain." Another An-other couple was assigned the '50s and they rewrote words to the musical grease, and did the funniest number I've ever seen. So, even though you can't come to the Homecoming showcase this year, make sure you come to all the rest.
