This week Gray reports that many dangers in submarine warfare were not caused by the enemy. A submarine is a very complex and in some ways delicate "instrument." And sailors are sailors. veterans Page 8 Special Adoption Fee for Pairs Adopt a Mare or Jenny Pair for $1 25.00 Aug. 1 thru Sept. 28, M-F 9-3 Sat. While we maneuvered to get a shot at it, the craft turned and came straight at us. We had to submerge, but no depth charges were fired at us. Then the approach was called off. As we took the torpedoes out of the tubes to clean them, 9 torpedo was sizzling with heat. The chief torpedoman told everyone in the compartment to evacuate the compartment immediately, but we watched the procedure through the hatch window. The torpedo was put back in the tube and fired. About 90 seconds later, we heard an explosion. We'd had a really re-ally close call. The torpedo probably had had a leak somewhere, some-where, and the salt water had caused a short circuit to the battery. At least that's what was assumed. One episode started when a crewman by the name of Gavin did not remember the rules. He was up on the conning con-ning tower, greasing the hatch, without permission from the officer on watch. The rule was that the hatch was never greased on the surface, because the dogs had to be turned in to make sure the grease worked into the moving mov-ing parts. When the worker had the dogs out, a plane came in on 0 Encourage your children to read a newspaper every day. It can help make their wishes come true." Brandy, recording artist, actress Your Town. The first man down the hatch knocked Gavin down the hatch. The quartermaster is to grab each man as he shoots down the ladder and push him to the side so the next man doesn't land on top of him. The last man down grabs the hatch lanyard, bringing the hatch down on him, while the quartermaster turns the dogs out to seal the hatch. In this disaster, because the dogs were already out, the hatch would not close, and we almost lost the boat and all hands on it. Some people have to learn the rules the hard way, though Gavin was not court-martialed. The radar was very vulnerable vul-nerable to the flooding, and numerous troubles developed from salt crystals that formed. Shorted-out motors had to be taken out, the parts washed in fresh water, repainted and baked in the cooks' ovens, so they would hold up. But now we had very little fresh water and no means to make more. 1 remember taking a spit bath in a cup of water. Of course we could take salt water baths anytime we wanted to, but I didn't enjoy the salty skin afterwards. af-terwards. I remember listening to Tokyo Rose telling us how our Japanese submarines were sinking passenger vessels ves-sels with women and children aboard. We laughed at these kind of remarks, but after a while, some of the crew got to wondering won-dering if there might be some truth in the statement. We did enjoy the modern American music always played on her station, so we would always tune in to hear Tokyo Rose make her remarks. Very shortly after this, we were informed that many of our submarines were entering the Japanese sea and having a heyday in sinking many Japanese Japa-nese ships. In August 1945, we arrived at Midway Island on our way back to the Good 01' USA. On our way through the Panama Canal, we stopped at Balboa and were given liberty to go into town. Some of the crew got carried away visiting cat houses and came back aboard with social diseases. The liberty liber-ty wasn't as much fun as they had thought it would be.
